I know it’s just a comic strip, but mamma mia, Mysta is red hot. As if she wasn’t appealing enough, now with the pearls and lace topped boots??? Thanks Joe Staton, you exceeded all my expectations and made it worth staying up. And now the mask is coming off? This Mystary has just begun and I’m already head over heels for it!

I really like the look of Mysta’s HQ. I wish the colorist had done a bit better job today so we could appreciate all the lab equipment. And it’s sure nice to see Mysta again, live and with something to say! She’s pretty anxious to get those bandages off, but the question is what are her plans after that?

That was fast. A friend of mine tweaked the color job and sent it to me, and I thought it was a pretty good improvement so I’m going to post it. Sorry it’s so large, I guess he copied and adapted the zoom version.

I like Mysta’s look too. Classic moon girl all glammed up! The comfy chair makes her look like a princess on her throne, which makes sense because she’s royalty of a type, the daughter of Moon Governor. I’m so excited to see how this story plays out. I’m going to guess her face will be the same one we’ve seen at times over the months, but who knows for sure. Meanwhile the bandages keep reminding us of the mystery. By the way, thanks, Willy007 for reposting the strip. The colors do look better.

Ohh, this strip is delicious. Mysta reminds me of why I liked her so much when I was a girl. She is beautiful! And Willy007 thanks for reposting it. It does look great and like coldsooner said no need to apologize. I remember all the moon women were pretty and dressed like Moon Maid. Was there a reason in the story why they dressed like that, maybe because of the moon climate? I haven’t read the Moon Maid stories since they were published so I’ve forgotten a lot. Is there a place to read those old stories, maybe on the Internet somewhere? Oh well sorry for all the questions but I am enjoying this adventure so far. So many fun things still to discover. What I’m waiting for is the meeting between Mysta and JUNIOR. That should be a juicy one! It will be fun to see Mysta with Honeymoon too, that has to be coming. I am sure this is the real Mysta and can’t wait to find out all the details about her!

WOW! twenty comments and almost HALF of them are all oogling about how “hot” mysta looks. (8 at this point to be exact) thats kinda sad, seems like some people come here just to drool over a cartoon female (tho drawn with exaggerated curves and playboy bunny outfit) instead of the story. and by the way, at around this time yesterday there was barely 15 coments but put mysta in the strip and that goes up by 33%… amazing.

maybe its me but i dont see a difference in teh original panel and the “altered one” that was posted….am i missing something?

also, are those OXYGEN TANKS underneath that table moon maid is sitting at? if so then perhaps her windpipe is damaged which could prevent her from taking breaths properly, and judging by the “jagged edge” to her word balloons in the cemetery scene, it could be a possibility that her lower face and throat are still slightly damaged… tho the word balloons arent “jagged” today so perhaps they ARE healed.. either that or her vocal chords get strained under stressful circumstances

    To Sullie (tsull2121):

The color change appears to be the “sparks” around her “horns.”

Good catch on the “jagged” balloons in the cemetery scene; I hadn’t previously noted that.

And I can’t agree with you more; there is too much drooling over her. (Remember Jessica Rabbit? “I’m not really bad, I’m just drawn that way…”)

Thanks again to Mike and Joe; Moon Maid now has a proper name, which she never had before.

Mysta’s power is that she was a beloved character – so beloved that most of us were willing to forgive the “silly science” that brought her to earth in the first place (not to mention the “silly science” that it took to bring her back).

She needs to be more than just “eye candy.”

When I first saw her, around midnight Denver time, on my cell phone (why I didn’t comment then), the first words that came to my mind, my original post, which would have been:

Some garb for a hospital patient that is being treated like a prisoner…

Another funny thought: We’re in an abandoned disco, serving as a “headquarters.”

While Mysta’s room (cell?) seems up-to-date and high tech, what’s with the papers lying on the floor in the hallway?

This trashy appearance helps discredit whatever this fearsome foursome are up to…

The short answer to terek is: Dick Tracy always was a “science fiction” detective – remember the “two-way wrist radio,” back in the days before transistors had been invented!

Other posters have debated back and forth the same points you are making; hopefully, you have noted that.

For some, in the 1960s, Gould may have “gone over the top” when he first introduced Mysta, then only known as the Moon Maid. This has been hotly debated on this blog. Nevertheless, Mysta did develop a rather strong following.

In 1978, pretty much as soon as Gould left the strip, then artists Fletcher and Collins sought to end what is now called the “Space Era” with a horrible explosion that was supposed to end all ties with the “moon people.”

In 1979, shortly after Mysta’s (now alleged) death, Doctor Zy Ghote was introduced in a hoax that was supposed to be Mumbles’ clone.

All that Staton and Curtis have done so far is simply bring these two very controversial characters – Mysta, whom Mike and Joe had the graciousness to name (Gould never did), and the fraudulent doctor whom I like to refer to as “the old Ghote.”

Hope this explains some of the situation as well as the debate…

To ralphewest: I fully agree. Realism: Prisoner or not, she is a hospital patient. Character development: While she was drawn scantily clad by Gould and others, nevertheless, in my humble opinion, this is not necessarily the best way to re-introduce her character.

also, strange choice for clothing for moon maid indeed cheapskate… i know dr’s sail and ghote COULDNT recreate the black dress she wore when she got blasted to bits, but to clone her and put her in the bunny costume when having her in regular street clothes/the black dress would have been more inconspicuous makes no sense if they are trying to keep her hidden from public view

Night-Gaunt49: A scientist who lost absolutely all credibility (if he had any) when he decided to link up with known criminal Mumbles with the express purpose of perpetrating a fraud – both in the scientific community as well as the potential to have defrauded Diet Smith. Not to mention, the scheme also involved an attempted murder.

This is just part of my prejudice, and I admit that it is a prejudice, that once again the old Ghote is promoting a hoax. Of course, I could be wrong. After all, if this is the “real deal” Mysta, then how did she escape the explosion and where has she been hiding?

Can someone explain why MM/faux MM doesn’t just take off the scarf/bandana covering her lower face? Her fiery nature would seem to dictate she doesn’t take orders easily and she isn’t being physically restrained from doing so. I suppose there could be some kind of mind control being employed that we’ll find out about later in the story. Also put me in the group that thinks the lust being expressed for a cartoon character is very, very creepy! S.I.T.O.A.N.M.I.

Could be the original clothing from Moon Maids wardrobe that was discarded when she “died”.

If someone apparently got “the not much left to work with” remains…Im sure they could have gotten their hands on other personal belongings as well.

I think in the original MM appearances you would see the “bolts” around her antenna from time to time as well.

    Interesting.

No drooling, here (though, I am a fan of the Space Period) — but I do have a simple question — since the gravesite of “Mysta” has already been disturbed, why doesn’t Tracy get a court order to have the remains (assuming there are any, to begin with) exhumed? Or, was that expolsion so horrible that the Tracy family buried an empty casket, way back when? Answers to these questions could yield significant clues as to what lies ahead…

I have been reading the (long) Mr. Bribery story by Gould in which Moon Maid plays a large part (the story takes place soon after the marriage of Junior and Mysta). In the story, we get a lot of information about Moon Maid’s powers and weaknesses.

Someone compared her costume to a Playboy Bunny suit. I had to laugh at one of Gould’s panels where a person in the crowd calls her “little bunny.” In the story, Gould draws Moon Maid in both Earth clothing and Moon garb.

One thing I have noticed comparing Gould’s drawings of MM and Joe’s modern rendition is Moon Maid’s stature. Gould drew her as very small and petite (slightly smaller than an Earth woman) almost pixie-like. Joe’s version seems to have her approximately the same size as a normal Earth women. The same applies if Stellaluna turns out to be from the Moon. Gould drew all of the Moon women as about the same size as Moon Maid.

In the Mr. Bribery story, it is revealed that Moon Maid must go out into the sun every day. Her powers are derived from exposure to the sun on her horns.

This is also the story where she becomes pregnant with Honeymoon.

For more info on Moon Maid, I would suggest you check out the Mr. Bribery story. I have always considered it to be one of Gould’s masterpieces. Plus, Moon Maid plays a very large roll in this tale.

Here is the link: Mr. Bribery Story

Ray Toler, who mentions dressing her as Gould used to draw her “would help facilitate bringing back her memory,” as well as references to amnesiacs. A clone would have no such memories to “bring back”; only the “real deal” would have “memories” to bring back.

And to those who ask, why no attempted contact with husband, friends, or family, well, “amnesia” is a pretty good card to play.

And a most hearty amen to all those who feel that this “lust” after a cartoon character is “very, very creepy”!

Now, this night worker, day sleeper, must go to BED!

Well, one last thought, anyway: If this Mysta is a “clone,” why would the old Ghote want to provide her with Mysta’s “memories,” the very thing that would call into question his “success” at cloning an albeit near human?

The more I think about it, the more I think this is the real Mysta, the real Moon Maid, and that she has been imprisoned by Zy Ghote and possibly others, including Retik and Stellaluna, and has been locked up pretty much since the explosion.

    And now, a good night!

Well conceived art this day, gentlemen. I agree with others how Mysta was drawn; in such a way suggesting royalty. Or at least a very confident person.

May I make one suggestion for later? Could we see Mysta in other outfits that benefit her beauty but different than the outfit she’s wearing now? Remember that DT is a dynamic strip, the characters change and clothing should as well. So many strips and even comics seem to be homogenized. Richie Rich never changed out of his suit, shorts, and red-bow tie.

The censors are out in force today! I just reread the first twenty comments, and yeah, one poster was over the top, and a few others remarked that Mysta is “hot” and “glammed up.” One poster was a woman who is delighted to see Mysta all beautiful again like she remembers her as a girl. Nothing too unexpected, but now what’s happened? With tsull2121 and cheapskate0 leading the charge, the judges of men’s hearts are out in full force, casting insults and expressing indignation over all this inappropriate behavior, and for Staton’s portrayal. Get real! Mysta is a fantasy character and always has been. She’s an attractive curvy woman, and that’s because people enjoy looking at attractive curvy women. She’s dressed like she is because that’s how Moon Maid dressed for 15 years in Gould’s day. Big surprise! And so what? Some of you (like tsull2121 I know for sure) are big comic book fans. You’re telling me that NO part of your love for comic books is how the women are drawn? Seriously, you guys are coming across like goody two shoes moral policemen, the kind you find in Saudi Arabia who spraypaint women for showing their ankles. I would suggest you are the people that need to get a grip. Stop attacking other posters for expressing their opinions about Moon Maid!

I remember that panel, Ray — but given that she was the equivalent of a teenager during the mid-1960s, it’s understandable. By the time MM married Junior/grew-up/became a mother, the Space Period was winding-down, and Chet Gould changed her fashion senses while making her a background character in the process.

I’m new to Go Comics for about a month or so and I think I’ve been posting comments to the Dick Tracy blog for only a couple of weeks now.

Boy! Am I glad that I sleep during most of these melees!

I see that my name popped up once, I think, as “leading a charge against” people perceived as “drooling” over a cartoon character. I think I simply said “amen” to what appeared to be several (as in more than two) comments in that vein by that time.

As for me, I’m kind of like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. Gee! Thanks for noticing!

Perhaps a better way for me to have put it is, even the unnamed Mysta was a strong character. As I return to Dick Tracy and Mysta after these several decades, I’m hoping to see more in the way of character development.

I am not the same person I was when I first saw Mysta, how many decades ago. Back then, the racy outfits didn’t bother me so much. I guess that means, among other things, I’m getting old.

But what this really reminds me of is the last Road Runner and Coyote cartoon I saw. Don’t know whether it was the last RRC cartoon ever made, but it could have been.

Gone was the lush, symphonic sound of the Warner Brothers orchestra; some cheap jazz sound track accompanied the pantomime act. (Jazz is great – just not the jazz they used in this cartoon)

As for the action: Road Runner and Coyote had entered a maze of tunnels. One of the curious features of the tunnels is that, as they changed shape, RR and C would change in size.

At the very end of the cartoon, Road Runner and Coyote come out of the tunnels, but now, Road Runner is the size of a bear and Coyote is the size of a sparrow.

Still a mime, Coyote holds out two signs, one at a time. The first sign said, “All these years, you wanted me to catch him!”

    The second sign, “*Now what?

As someone who really wants the return of the “real deal” Mysta, and following the comments on this blog, I think that is exactly where we all are now: *Now what?

……when I first saw the 100 comments, I thought cool, some good reading……should’ve known better, as usual, when the amount soars, it’s because half or more of them are people arguing over meaningless b.s. Although I am a heterosexual male, I don’t really get “off” looking at pics of half clad attractive cartoon characters, either…..but I have NO problem with others who do, it’s a free country. Nor do I have problems with posters who object, but probably would have NO problem if it was a hot guy instead (no names, lol) Again, this is a forum for the EXCHANGE of ideas, not a monitoring board for approval of them. I, for instance, HATE the name “Mysta”….or any name, period, for her……because who the heck names someone AFTER THEY’RE DEAD? But for the majority who are cool with it; I’m cool with you, too!
