Mr. “Red” Ken Livingstone is full of sour grapes. She took a bankrupt nation (caused by Ken’s cronies) and returned a semblance of what it once was.
Before Baroness Thatcher if the unions said jump the nation shook – I remember the dead not being buried, the rubbish not being collected, not being able to go to hospital and not being able to have a warm meal – everything caused by those union fellows who wanted to feather their own nests.
Housing crisis? Baroness Thatcher allowed people in social housing to become owners of their own home. An attempt to stop this was caused by the Labour councils. She tried to reduce the hold Government had peoples lives. Something that is hated by Mr. Livingston.
She had her principles, and stuck by them. Most people can respect (even if they do not like them.)
At what point does media coverage become necrophilia? Because we’ve gone past that point in less than a day. The truth is that in England news of Thacher’s was greeted with spontaneous celebration in many places. Her economic policies hurt a lot of people and are a big contributor to the current mess that the whole world finds itself in today.
Or: if you want war instead of peace, appoint a woman.Despite the mythos, there haven’t been too many instances of lasting peace when Women have been in charge of government. Not saying that is all bad or their fault, but the promise for “emancipation” was peace in our time.Thatcher was pretty ruthless at war, can’t deny that.
I like the cartoon. My mother used to say “When a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do, he finds the woman who knows how to get it done.” ^British politics is as divisive as American politics. Ms. Thatcher was a product of her generation and her paradigm and while she may have broke toes when she trod on them, she also did good for her nation. Unlike so many American politicians, on both sides of the aisle, she acted on her convictions founded in her simple background and complicated culture.^She was a coin of her realm. She had two sides and it on the side she felt most strongly the coin would show. You may not have liked the call, but the coin had value. No one can say that England would have done better under another leader. It can be implied, but never proved.Respectfully,C.(A father, husband, son, and brother of strong women)
Probably the greatest female leader in her own right since Elizabeth I. Of course there were many other great ones who had to operate behind the scenes such as Livia Drusilla and Theodora who propped up Augustus and Justinian.
Justice22 said, about 6 hours agoIs “Iron lady” another name for “Iron maiden”?-No, it is not. It is in reference to the USSR’s Iron Curtain, which PM Thatcher and US President Reagan worked to defeat by economics and foreign policy their entire terms.(Mz. Thatcher 11 years and Mr. Reagan 8 years)
the USSR’s TASS first used “Iron Lady” for her.-When the USSR closed for business in the 1990s the credit was due to Thatcher, Reagan, Pope Paul II, Lech Walesa and Gorbachev.- Thank you for your accurate post from England, Adam Sherlock! The Leftwing Labour Party got the UK into disaster beginning at the end of WW2…..from 1979, Thatcher led the true recovery and curbed hurtful damage by the totalitarian Unions, reformed the UK “wall street” and should be credited for saving England from total financial collapse…the minute the people elected liberals after Thatcher left as PM in 1990, they worked to end her reforms and started the country back down the path to socialism, which she famously nailed for “always running out of other people’s money"!
30 years later, Sweden, Norway, Belgium & Denmark spend more on social welfare, yet their economies are stronger than Great Britain’s. Maybe Maggie was wrong?Anyone who thinks the Soviet Union was toppled by anything other than it’s own internal corruption & decay, is deluding themselves. No credit to Maggie for that, either.

Not sure about the quote’s accuracy, but Thatcher(like Reagan) was a true leader. It’s something that’s been missing here for a long time.

Experience shows there is no difference with either when dealing with politicians.

While Iron Lady gave us some impression of on side of her legacy, Billy Elliot and Full Montie provide the other side of her story.

An iron maiden was a medieval torture device.
