Gramma Evie: Val? Are you asleep? Val: No, I'm in a coma. Gramma Evie: Managing five kids is EXHAUSTING. Val: No kidding. Are they finally asleep? Gramma Evie: I threatened them with their LIVES if they got up one more time. Val: That should do it... Child: MOM?!

I’m sure my stepmother had her fair share raising five daughters (three through one marriage and two through another) alone after two divorces before my father became her third marriage.

So Evie’s threats didn’t work with Val and Joan either? They still turned out fairly well!

Five kids in a family that grew up together is quite different from having three additional kids foisted upon you. I am the oldest of five, and while we might have been a handful at times, all of the older kids took care of the younger ones much of the time because both parents worked. Of course, this was in a different time and place – 50’s and 60’s in a rural area. We really had only ourselves on which to rely. We are still very close and take care of our mother, age 87.

Grandma, all your daughter needs to do is turn you you over to the police for making terroristic threats against children! Plan on spending the next 50 years in a maximum security prison!!!!!

I divorced my X when I was 38 and had 3 boys and a girl, all just about a year apart. Met my man soon after and he had 3; we are still friends and lovers and our kids have known some of that from the beginning. It was complicated for a while. My kids were never really a problem to me because the older ones helped as much as they could.
