Gli italiani sì sono latini; non ci sarebbe lo spagnolo. (Italians ARE Latinos; there wouldn’t be the Spanish language).

Italians are Latini. Italian comes from Latin just like Spanish, Portuguese, French, Catalan, Romanian and other languages. I am Italian American (my family is from the south of Italy, I have mixed blood), and part of my family is in Argentina. This question of identity can be a complex one. I consider myself Latin. Unfortunately, Italian Americans discarded the term “Latini” for themselves back when they went from being radicals (e.g., Sacco and Vanzetti, Vito Marcantonio, etc.) to assimilating into being middle-class Americans.

To Wabbit’s comment yesterday about how long some people have lived in this country and had children born here, thereby somehow according to him, make them NOT illegally in the country. Well sorry the laws are there and just because you go unnoticed for years is not a valid excuse. There a thousands of people on waiting lists to get a entry visa and just because you can sneak into the country should not give you preference.

To Night-Gaught49’s comment trying to say because most of the talk is about illegal Hispanics makes this all bigotry. Sorry that does not fly, the reason you hear all the talk about Hispanics is that they are the vast majority of the population of illegal aliens.

Good strip today, very balanced and shows that bigotry can come from any corner. Would be nice if we could stomp bigotry out, but humans are too much like our animal forbearers.

There’s an old joke that says that Argentina was funded by the British, built by the Germans, and populated by Italians who speak bad Spanish.

Joking aside, I agree with elx. The stereotypical image of upper class portenos is European-wannabes. In fairness, they’re probably about the same as upper class chilangos or any other large Latin American city, but Argentinians got stuck with the stereotype.
