Trains are not the answer. If they were Amtrak would not be losing millions of dollars every year. Government does very little well. Look at the postal service, Amtrak, Schools (since the Feds took over).
Amtrak is perfectly profitable and highly popular along the high-speed corridor in the east. Governor Christie’s veto of the rail tunnel was a huge disaster for New Jersey.
The USPS is losing billions and our public schools are a laughing stock outspending the rest of the world with a lot of countries’ students outperforming ours.
We need “better” people? Care to define “better”?
And we need a “nonlethal” defense against what?
Yeah, things can be better—get rid of 95% of the current DC Denizens and repopulate DC with constitutional conservatives.
So, the roads we have are not subsidized? Why do we pay taxes on all gasoline sales? Why do we have local and state taxes for road maintenance and building? That is not subsidizing auto travel? As to the rail tracks not going to centers of population, that is what the busses are for. I did not mind riding a bus to get to the rail station where I rode a train traveling 187 mph. I hope you all get a chance to experience high speed rail such as China has.
You said, “High Speed rail corridors are by necessity exclusionary zones. There is no more efficient way to divide communities, road, trails wildlife, people this is mitigated only by very expensive tunnels and over passes. (How many per mile?)”I don’t usually say this, but, LOL!! And “freeways”? What about “freeways”?And BTW, “freeways” don’t “turn a profit” either. Where properly supported (and not undermined with huge subsidies for excessive road systems, rail systems are not only effective and efficient, but profitable.
