Just put your EBT card in the ATM and buy whatever you want in New York. You can even make it rain. Mr King probably still thinks people are waiting in line to get their cheese and paper certificates for food stamps.

The better idea would be to make people show proof of insurance before they’re allowed to buy food with no nutritional value. That way at least they’re the ones “taking responsibility” for their stupid behavior.

PS: Another cartoonist only depicts fat people as white. The obesity epidemic is most pronounced uptown. Deal with it.

“while still allowing Cigarettes and tobacco products to be sold in the city.”

I suspect you will find a much greater direct tax revenue from cigarettes. Can’t be absolutely sure without seeing the sales tax regs.

The way the current EBT system works, you can’t put tobacco, alcohol, and in some cases even soda on you’re actual EBT card. However, you CAN use the card to get a certain percentage of your benefits back as cash, and that is how people get around the loophole. So now, thanks to their addictions, their families have even LESS money to feed their families than before. Why was this system approved? To increase revenue from alcohol and tobacco sales. (The official excuse is to allow the poor access to bus fare, gas money, or prescriptions, but the states do see quite a boost from their increased “sin tax” item sales)

According to every link I checked including Snopes you can’t buy prohibited items with an EBT card in Florida, Period.

The hysterical nature of the US abounds. Jesus. As laws go, this one was dumb, but fairly harmless. Just buy two damned sodas. But no, that’s too much, and thousands of dollars in legal fees MUST be thrown at the problem.

On the other hand, legal issues that genuinely DO infringe on freedoms, like waterboarding or habeus corpus or what have you, and much impotent hand wringing commences-

ha ha, just kidding, it’s mostly forgotten about now. God, I’m terrified of this country.
