My theory is that any written history is hard to trust- even if it’s being written down as it happens it can still be filtered through Point Of View and Agenda. And any Hollywood version of history- even if its something that happened within the last couple of years- is suspect. We know what the Hollywood agenda is- and it’s not that accuracy makes good popcorn moments.
J.R.R. Tolkien pretended that all his Middle Earth stories were translations of historical events. I suspect there’s history that we learned in school that’s just as imaginary.
someone said “The past is what happened, but history is what’s written down.” .And as a corollary “The victors write the history books.”.(or words to that effect)
Well- I’ve come close. I’ve given interviews to newspapers that promptly got things wrong, even though they appeared to be taking notes. Years ago, when I was working on the Rugrats strip, I did a comic store appearance in Western PA. I made it pretty clear that I was one of many artist and writers who worked on spin-off projects- and that I did not work on the TV show. Of course, when the article appeared the morning of the signing, they announced that I was the Rugrats’ creator. Um…oops.

ALthough it’s probably a safe bet that Lincoln did not really fight vampires… more likely that would have been Grant.

I thought A. Lincoln, Vampire Hunter was based on the O’Reilly book.
