Breaking news: In and astonishing turn of events, Susie Derkins overcame hot favourite Calvin to win the Road Safety Poster Campaign held for grade school students. Sussie said she was happy and satisfied with her effort, and lauded the school authorities for initiating such competitions. Calvin was not available for comment.
Even though Calvin is imagining the newspaper articles, Hobbes appears stuffed in the photo. This is because Calvin knows from experience that whenever he has had his picture taken with Hobbes, other people have been unable to see in the picture that Hobbes is real. But there is another reason. Bill Watterson needed Calvin to dominate in the photo, just as he is dominating the headlines. But Hobbes is bigger than Calvin, so the real Hobbes would have dominated Calvin in the photo. Even if Bill had shown just their heads, the two heads would have been the same size.
I knew that Calvin wouldn’t win! I just didn’t figure that it would be his rival Susie! To make things worse, what will probably happen next to add insult to injury; Calvin will most likely get in trouble for creating an obscene disgusting poster and be be grounded without Hobbs or any of his toys for a full week! On top of this Susie may rub Calvin’s nose in it about winning!
I’d have to consult my books to be sure, but I think originally the first panel said “Wunderkind” instead of “Wunderkid,” the former being the correct word. Anyone have “Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat” handy to verify? If I’m right, I wonder why the changed it.
I checked and you’re right, in “Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat” this strip said “Wunderkind”, while here it says “Wunderkid”. (Wunderkind means a child prodigy.)
Face reality Calvin-Life is based on being right place right time.Another panel of judges would have probably produced another winner – but not Calvins!(Run the horses of the Kentucky Derby again, and the results would be a totally different line up – life is chance)
@margueritem: Good to see you back in first place! I remember when you were always there! Some really good comments today. @M2MM: Yes, I loved that, too. Subtle!
Hi GPdancer. Thanks, and glad you enjoy the strips. I always enjoy discovering “new” people like you out there, who aren’t really new, because they have been following the comments for quite some time.

May I hate Susie Derkins?
Newshound41 almost 11 years ago
In the middle newspaper, shouldn’t we see the “live” version of Hobbes since this is happening in Calvin’s imagination?

I bet Susie won’t even drive a fire truck on people’s lawns.

Hard to understand why he did not win, should be a second prize.
greenbird almost 11 years ago
Wait, if the newspapers are in his imagination, why is Hobbes stuffed instead of real?
bluram almost 11 years ago
How can this be? There will be gloom and misery in Watterson Town tonight.

There is no joy in Hobbesville,Mighty Calvin has struck out.
Maxride268 almost 11 years ago
@NormanBatesNo you may not. Susie is actually a great character, and she had no idea that he was expecting to win and it would affect him that badly.

Calvin should have conceded long ago, but surely he will be elated at Susie’s good fortune. NOT!

Calvin’s hopes were raised, but now they’re razed. That homonym is an antonym.

This one is great! Love the newspaper headlines (especially knowing they are coming from Calvin’s imagination).
