I’ve been competing against an average of 500 other applicants for the jobs I’ve been applying for. My last interviewer (the first interview in a year) told me 700 others had applied for that position! It’s rough out there. Another interview today, praying it works out!

In my state, the reddest in the country with the most conservative business friendly enviroment we have been hiring pretty much non stop since the recession started, just not as fast. My company right now is trying to add between 25-50 positions, and while they do get a lot of applicants, most don’t qualify.

Even after I spend weeks interviewing and hire people 3 weeks out of training people quit. Ironic isn’t it? so many people would love to have jobs and those that get them quit.

Many won’t even show up for interviews and they look really promising, when I finally get a hold of them they are like, “no I don’t want the job, I just have to apply to keep unemployment coming in, when I get down to 3 or 4 weeks left I’ll come back and take you up on the offer” then I flag them as unhirable in our computers so if they do come back they won’t get another chance.

Recently my sister-in law was laid off from her job, she send out about 200 resumes and had 4 job offers in a week.

Just maybe the republicans have something right, at least when it comes to job creation. While we haven’t been immune to the recession (due to the interlocking nature of economics) it has only slowed growth not resulted in lay offs. I happen to know of a least 200+ open jobs right now that employers cannot fill. Keep in mind that there are times I wish this wasn’t a right to work state. There is no guarantee that we won’t be let go at a moments notice, but that enviroment does create jobs. Sometimes I wish we had a union but then I realize that would increase company costs and we’d have less jobs.

Moral of my story, people may need to move to where the jobs are instead of staying where they want to try and get one.
