The chart on the blog shows a series of Venn diagrams, which are used in symbolic logic. They group items according to factors that they have in common. Or don’t have in common. NOR is neither, NAND means “not and” and XNOR “exclusive nor.”

Imagine that the square is a field with those two intersecting circles drawn on it, and all the people in town are on the field. All of the people who like baseball are told to stand inside circle A. All of the people who like football are told to stand inside circle B. All of the people who like both baseball and fotball are told to stand inside the are where the two circles intersect. All of the people who have a life are told to stand outside the circles. The shaded area shows where cetain people stand—“A” is “everyone who likes baseball.”

Okay. The “A and B” symbol means “people who like both baseball and football,” with their region shaded. “A nor B” means “people who like neither baseball nor football.” “A XOR B” means “all the people who like either basebal or football, but excluding the people who like both sports or neither sport.” “A NAND B” means “everyone except the people who like both sports.” “True” means “Everyone in town, now that it’s soccer season, and if we cared about soccer we wouldn’t be Americans, now would we?”

She gave up because she’s an incurable romantic. In other words, the antibiotics no longer work.

I, on the other hand, have never given up on romance. I stuck it in the closet for a couple of years after my first marriage went to Pluto, but I dragged it out, sent it to the dry cleaners, and got it back all bright and shiny again.

Romance is like a Chinese finger trap. OR is that a reverse Chinese finger trap. Maybe a Venn diagram would straighten that out.

Such a treat for your man NOT! Spam on a white roll with canned beans, a “manly” salad of canned peach slice with cottage cheese. “He’ll say it’s better than downtown”.

I know little was understood about nutrition in most of the public in those days, but REALLY!. . . .

@Teresa: It matters naught what the hoi-polloi think. If you’re the artist, and you want Grace the Face as your avatar, the powers that be at GoComics should bow to your desires. For what it’s worth, I say bring back Grace!

Re: Grace the FaceI have noticed today that many of the icons/avatars on my “carousel” have been changed; apparently GoComics is trying to freshen up the imagery in the belief that this move will somehow magically translate into increased readership and increased patronage of advertisers (of course, using AdBlock, I see only the house-ads, such as for cartoonists’ compendia). The premise seems questionable. And if the cartoonist specifically opposes the change, I see no reason for GoComics to persist. But the long-range solution is to make icon-rights subject to your contractual relationship next time contract renewal rolls around. —My five cents worth (that’s how much it costs nowadays to make two cents). And, BTW, I would prefer Grace.

About the replacing of Grace the Face: The oh-so-serious Grace combined with the inexplicable words “Frog Applause” let new readers know they are in for something different here. Random squiggly character does not have the same impact or meaning. Bring back Grace.

Sable and Wolverine were converted merchant ships that were used during WW2 on Lake Michigan for training carrier pilot’s takeoffs and landings. They operated from Waukegan and in conjunction with Glenview Naval Airstation. The idea was that since they operated solely on Lake Michigan there were no worries about enemy interference plus the ships themselves had no elevators or hangars and took the place of Escort Carriers that could be kept in combat roles..Although they were on an inland body of water there were still hazards associated with landing and taking off. There were accidents and casualties. Many of the ditched/wrecked planes are still in Lake Michigan. One wreck was pulled up late last year and will be eventually restored. I think that the SBD hanging at “A” concourse at Midway Airport in Chicago was also a salvage from the Great Lakes “Carrier Fleet”..I’m not sure of the naming protocol.

The “IX” designation for US naval vessels stands for “miscellaneous unclassified.” It’s a slightly better designation than WTF. There’s a list of IX type ships here:

    http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/46/46idx.htm

Wolverine got her name because the wolverine is associated with Michigan. There’s a Sable River that empties into Lake Michigan, and my guess is that’s gthe source os the USS Sable’s name.

Adding to gigagrouch’s comments, there’s a history of how US naval ships were named here:

    http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq63-1.htm

Sometimes the names were whimsical; the carrier Shangri-La got her name from a joke President Roosevelt made about the launching site for the Doolittle raid.
