    …as opposed to violence in the campo? Just the reasons differ. Drugs & power in the city, land & power out in the countryside.

    I wonder what triggered this cartoon (pardon the poor pun).

    om, It might be the coming Olympics. There is quite a bit of concern over Rio. If I remember correctly, it has more violence than the other major cities because no one faction has managed to corner the drug trade.

    Gladius: I had initially thought it might have to do with the Olympics but the cartoonist is from Salvador da Bahia which is sort of a rival to Rio. It also suffers from extreme violence.

    And yep, kudos to Gocomics for getting the geography right this time.

    Brazil is an important regional power now with fair international influence. Its international standing will definitely increase but I don’t believe that it has the resources or institutional structures that would enable it to dominate the world stage.
