Linus, do you know what a rhetorical question is? It’s one that’s not meant to be taken or answered literally, but is merely used to lend emphasis to an argument.
Chicago and Washington second place in 1930, but which Chicago team – Cubs or White Sox? Also: Linus refers to the Washington Senators of 1930 when Washington, D.C. had a baseball team. And today in 2013 Washington, D.C. has a baseball team called the Washington Nationals and their “W” logo is in the style of the “W” cursive capital of the Walgreen’s drug store chain logo.
Unfortunately, it seems that practice and hard work are more important than spirit for succeeding in most things. But the spirit part makes it a lot more fun :-)
It’s not intelligence if Linus’ remark demonstrates that he clearly missed Charlie Brown’s point. It’s not a coach’s job to motivate his players to settle for second place — it’s his place to motivate them to WIN. Linus should have kept his mouth shut and concentrated on listening to what Charlie Brown was actually saying, not responding to a rhetorical statement that wasn’t meant to be taken or responded to literally.

I’d remember who came in last, especially if it were my team.
