Pit bulls were actually originally bred in the USA for hunting semi-wild game (Range cattle and hogs), not for combat. And wiener dogs were originally bred to hunt badgers. GSD’s were bred to guard sheep. Regardless, aside from beagles, retrievers and labs, few dogs today are still used for what they were originally bred for…

I don’t own a pit bull, but not for fear of the dog; rather for fear that I’d be labeled a douche for owning such a dog, people thinking that only thugs would want to own these dogs. Oh well, maybe some day the Pit bull will join the ranks of the GSD and doberman on the list of “Dogs people once had an irrational fear of”. Unfirtunately the only way to get off this list is for another breed to take its place. Maybe labs next time? Great Danes? Mastiffs?

You people are all crazy … they were bred to find the best BBQ pits with brisket . . . IE: pit bull

We now have our second pit mix, a 90-pounder. Like the first, he is a passive sweetheart; we should have named him Eeyore. Our female Australian Shepherd is the alpha, and the little MinPin and the five pound cat abuse the pit mercilessly. Our pit serves a purpose – for strangers – by merely standing and staring. The only time we hear his basso bark is when deer enter the yard, and he tries to tell them he wants to play.

Those IDIOTS, who train the Pits to to fight and be aggressive are the ones perpetuating the lie that this breed is dangerous! This sort needs to be sent to a maximum security prison for a LONG time! Not just a short “time away”like Michael Vic.

too bad so many people have made these dogs have to fight. I was working on the census and one gurgled at me. It was like a growl but it was also a gurgle. I have met really nice ones. I found an old picture of my dad standing near their dugout and he had a American bull dog. He was 2 or 3 years old.

Wow. So much ignorance. I own an American Staffordshire Terrier (“Pit Bull”) who’d sooner lie on a stranger’s lap, belly up for rubs, than ever bite anyone. I’ve NEVER personally met an aggressive “pit bull”, because I’d never be friends with anyone who intentionally made their dogs mean. It’s all in how you train ’em, folks.
