    “Chili con carne” means “chili with meat”. Beans are an optional but frequent ingredient according to my sources, both literary and living (neighbors who make the most amazing variants and also argue over whose recipe is best. I cannot give an opinion, as they are all great, with or without beans).

    “Carne” is meat. “Frijoles” is beans in Spanish. So, chili con carne is chili with meat.
