I’m not even allowed to wear sneakers in the office without a medical excuse.

When General Electric bought our shop, everyone, on the manufacturing floor, employees and visitors alike, was required to wear steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, and, if the parts were to be handled, cut-resistant gloves.

Sneakers? Flip flops? I’ve never worn either to the office, and I’ve worked at casual software companies. But then again, I believe that people should look professional at work, and pool/beach wear doesn’t belong in an office. Plus, I don’t think any of them look good with the sneakers anyway. Their outfits look nice, but the sneakers drag down their look.

Hello Cathy friends! Happy Wednesday! I hope you all have a great day!

The challenge I had when working, was maintaining a professional appearance, while working outside in all kinds of weather. Fortunately, I had an upper level manager who told me – Wear what is practical, and works for you. If that needs to be sneakers, just don’t pick bright pink or chartreuse. (He is the same one who wouldn’t let me wear black designer jeans, even though the company dress code specifically allowed them. But that is a different story.)

As it happened, I never found sneakers comfortable. My go-to shoes were leather boots – high topped in summer, knee-high in winter, and always waterproof. Only sometimes, if I knew I was spending time in the office, I wore Mary-Janes, or low heels.

Because my job required a lot of stooping, bending and sometimes crawling under cars, I always wore slacks. Imagine my dismay when I got a new female supervisor who showed up wearing a sundress and wedge sandals to visit auto repair shops with me.

I really had no idea what to expect in the last panel today. Somehow I was expecting something more … [eye-roll]-worthy … though I see their point. Ya just can’t win some days, huh?

    HI, MOM. Hello, “Cathy” Clan.

These women look absolutely ridiculous! Why are they wearing such ugly sneakers with their skirts and dresses to work anyhow? That never would have been allowed in any office I worked in in the past. If they’re not yet ready to transition back to regular shoes, don’t they have at least one pair of high-heeled sandals they could wear instead? I probably own more of those kind of sandals than I do flats and I don’t even have a job to wear them to! ;-)
