If this is Irving’s 25th high school reunion, that means that he was 43 eleven years ago (2002), which means that Cathy was at least 38 or 39. That means that he was 51 and she was 46 or 47 when she finally announced her pregnancy in 2010. It’s not outside the realm of possibility, I suppose, but it’s still a long shot to me for her to get pregnant at that age.

I have always said that Cathy was too old in the strip to have a baby. I don’t know why Guisewite didn’t have them adopt like Guisewite did in real life. This strip has always followed “real time” in my opinion.

It bugged me when they changed the Cathy timeline too. Andrea explaining to Cathy that Zenith was old enough to get married already (which she was, barely) because she was “a young mother” really annoyed me. Andrea was “over 30 and ready for a commitment” when she met Luke. They got married within 30 days of meeting and had babies fast because Andrea was getting OLD. Yeah, I always felt like cartoon Cathy should have adopted too. Cathy got 10-15 years younger, and it’s just not fair! LOL

On a technical point, women can experience the menopause at a very wide range of ages. Some women of 30 will find out it’s already too late for them to have a family, whereas others can still be fertile well into their fifties.

In the Good Olde Days a woman could spend 30 years getting pregnant, giving birth and then getting pregnant again, so that families of fifteen or even more were not uncommon – although often these children didn’t all survive into adulthood.

My own grandmother had twelve children – and her husband died at 47, so there could have been even more!

I’m not advocating huge families or late pregnancies, but these things can and do happen. If Cathy had a baby at 48 or so, I’m sure she and Irving would both be delighted – and they might have had time for a sibling or two as well.

I can’t WAIT until Monday to see what Irving’s other 43-year-old former classmates look like when they go in. Will they look normal, like they grew up and matured after high school, as they should have . . . or will they look like just as big a loser as Irving does, still completely immature and desperately trying to recapture their 18-year-old, lost-long-ago youths?!? [I sure hope Cathy Guisewite doesn’t skip over this very important part of his class reunion!!!!!]

legaleagle48: Thanks for providing the math/age numbers for Cathy and Irving. I was in the process of trying to come up with them myself when I scrolled down the page and saw your post. How [Cathy G.] could have had our Cathy having a baby on her own without showing her needing/having outside fertility help when she was that close to 50, I don’t know. She should have been announcing she was menopausal by then — NOT pregnant!!!!! Well, unlike the rest of us, Cathy is just eternally young and never ages, I guess . . . much like all the people in the “Family Circus” and “Hi and Lois” comics. None of them — not even the kids — ever get old either!!!!!
