I think Bob is looking for one to sit in front of himself, and the cat is giving him a “Don’t even think about getting me to move,” hiss. The last panel would be sarcasm. Also could have been stated, "Gee, you’d never know the furnace is running.

in keeping with the MFA-y Sunday, the hiss from Tommy is representative of feline plight in a household society while getting warm in front of a natural gas heated vent. Tommy’s discourse when referencing the act of being heated is simple, yet complex at the same time. In fact, one could say that the hissing could be from the furnace itself…if that were true, then the heat represents society and the cat represents how we block ourselves out from ourselves.

Then again, he could just be an immovable object not willing to move over for a squirrel.

I would hope that house has more than 3 vents.
