Norman: Let me explain how our new 60-inch, high-definition TV works, dad... When you want to watch it, push "power" on this remote. Then on this remote, push "input" and select "HDML-1" Then use that remote to change channels and the other remote for volume. Enjoy!

I remain remote from remotes.

A few years back, we had 5 remotes for our one tv. I made the kids handle it for me most of the time. Now we are down to three.

Bravissimo!“I find television very educational. Every time someone switches it on I go into another room and read a good book.” (attributed to Groucho Marx)

When we got digital cable (with DVR), they gave us one remote, which they themselves programmed to work the box, TV, and DVD player. Only one remote to control three devices…go figure.

Sure wish we still had a dial not to touch. I’d figured IT out long ago. This super sized weightless ,skinny thing we have now can only be figured out useing a grandkid . Pretty handy, having grandkids I mean. I use ’them for all sorts of things.

It frustrates many of us that there are so many conflicting codes between devices and providers so a single remote is not always capable of controling everything, because an older TV in other room may have simpler controls over the same number of devices.

As to Ralph Drabble, his personna is just incompatible with anything educational (like Burl Penny or Homer Simpson). He (like them) is related to donuts (and other empty calories) and lack of energy and/or ambition.

There’s almost a “Pluggers” feel in today’s strip, especially in the last panel. “A Plugger doesn’t need high technology to be entertained”.

My question is, how does Ralph afford a 60" TV with a TSA agent’s salary and a son in college?

With MythTV, my Linux PC is my remote.

No, a Luddite I am not; notice I spelled “remotes” as in plural. If it cannot be operated by one remote then I spurn its use.
