A crash – Might provide a good excuse to take a walk down memory lane. I am probably telling on myself here, but Nancy is not all that much older than I am. I was wondering if a walk down memory lane might include a look at Aunt Fritzi and Nancy during World War II. Aunt Fritzi paper dolls were the best there were. She probably was not the original model for Barbie dolls – but Barbie dolls were modeled after paper dolls.

I think Fritzi’s hormone level is a bit elevated right now….good time to give blood…brighten up a senior’s day.

@Guy Gilchrist:I concur, I would like to see this progress. I don’t know if you had this planned to go on, or end it somehow, but if you are taking votes, mine is to have this go the way it is looking.

@Guy Gilchrist: this is a comment copied from yesterday:Actually, it would be interesting to see Nancy have a father figure.Would be nice to see Sluggo get a guardian too or does he just have parents the neglect him? That is one part I never figured out. If that was ever explained I missed it. When the strip started their may have been orphans living on their own, but nowadays Children’s Services would get involved. Maybe get him foster parents?

Not cutting the strip down, Guy, just that has been an unanswered question for me since the 60’s. I first started reading newspaper comics when I was in the third grade, and Nancy was part of them. Depending on where I lived and what was available in my local paper I was on and off with Nancy for about 30 years. Now, thanks to the magic of the internet, I am an avid reader once again!

As far as I know, Sluggo’s situation was never completely clear in the newspaper version, but in John Stanley’s comic-book version it seemed pretty certain that Sluggo lived on his own. We frequently saw him getting into trouble with his crabby-to-the-point-of-mania neighbor, Mr. McOnion, but in all these stories where we saw Sluggo at home, we never saw anyone else in his house. (But anyone more expert than I feel free to correct me.)

“Winnie Winkle” and “Fritzi Ritz” started out as very similar strips, but they went in different directions. I do not think that a sudden death for Phil would be seen as acceptable today. (Look at all the protests over Lisa’s death in “Funky Winkerbean”, and that isn’t perceived as a ”kid comic” to begin with.) Mary Gold was a long time ago. Even having Phil decide to join the Peace Corps would be dodgy, at this point.

Remember what I talked about earlier….with the characters having some changes coming along in this new year. After 80 years….comic strips and comic books…. much has happened. Much more to come. Think of this as not just a continuation….but as a bit of a REBOOT, too.

WOW INDEED! Just look at the way Fritzi is stretching out that sweater! And Phil had those sweater puppies pressed against him during the whole duration of the kiss. No wonder he’s got a goofy look on his face. Wow indeed!

Wow! on that first panel is right! Sorry ladies, some of us guys can’t (or won’t) help ourselves. How come Nancy is about the only strip that I read the comments to? I think it’s kind of a nostalgia thing. I hope Guy isn’t planning on getting Frizi married, Nancy a dad, Sluggo adopted, and then saying (in effect) “And they lived happily ever after. The End.”

Why now? I have had stories and backgrounds on our cast for years. In interviews I would discuss the central theme of the strip. Which is unconditional love. Through the gags, through it all….our two children are orphans. This year….in the spring…..I decided to tell a Christmas Story as I have in my other strips like Mudpie, and The Muppets, in the past. The strip will always have sight gags, too. Thanks for your readership.
