I do believe Aaron is sending an unexpected twist to this tale. I so do love reading a comic that, for once, doesn’t telegraph its every move. You are a rare talent…

Even if Linda couldn’t reproduce the cake, I think Linda’s doing him as much of a service as she can by playing along (and even more so if she is able to produce the cake). I can see Meg’s point of view on how this could be cruel, but considering he searches the same places every night for Trudy and her cake, this might be the best thing Linda can do for him right now.

She could add the chocolate to the vitamin stuff. She said it was like a cake. I think that Meg is a little batty too. She bawls Linda out rather than coach her to a better mean to support him. I hope that Linda goes Yayayahoho back at her when she shows up with the cake. Should set the group into a corner. Keep up this wonderful examination of our Linda and the Endtown. Hugs and horrays.Blessed Be

If you like the storyline here, then please help Endtown continue running through 2013. Either buy a print of the current sketch, bid on the sketch itself, or make a donation online. You’ll be able to live with yourself better if you do..

Seriously,..I think she can pull it off!

Ground oats from the oatmeal to make a form of flour,…eggs from the egg-layers in Endtown,…milk from you-know-who, and chocolate from the tootsie rolls…

    It just…might…work…

Odd thing is I think Linda does see him as a real person with real feelings. She’s making the turn. Maybe she needs to change her name to Trudy. It would help bury her past. Or would that be too Jackrabbit (get rid of your old self and embrace the change)? That would make her Trudy Koala?

It looks like Linda will be making a cake in secret, but I thought she might try to get other Endtowners involved to make a “Stone Cake” from the ingredients each has separately. She has the chocolate, Maude has the milk and oats, someone else might give up eggs, etc., either through donation or barter. This is how small towns and other communities would pool their resources during the Depression and other times of hardship, and how many harvest holidays were founded. This may grow into a new tradition called Trudy Day.

TSOJ has the point. If Linda makes the cake. What is next? That is the danger in what she is contemplating. Mr. Hopper gets cake. He tells a friend. They show up and now they want cake. What now? Linda should have not said come back tomorrow and I will save you a slice. She should have said maybe tomorrow you know how the cakes sell. What she has done is “guaranteed” a slice. It is a common mistake trying to be nice but can lead to consequences as either she has the cake or not. Its like facing a terrible disaster and tell folks everything is going to be alright. Its not going to be alright. You can give hope as there is a chance of survival if there is a chance. I could in my line of work lie to the folks pinned in a car crash and bleeding out before my eyes and I could not help. But I chose the truth and helped ease them into the facts of the situation. Take messages to give to family. Hold their hand, comfort them but I could not lie and say you are going to be okay if it was not true. But that is me I have heard others tell folks dying it will be okay and they will be alright and live with it but I just can’t do it.And so far she only has access to cream (has to convince Maude to be milked), rolls, and oatmeal (again needed from Maude). She is going to have a hard time making the cake.

Well, she could let Meg in on her plans…I’ve got this feeling in my gut that “cake is coming,” but, alas, every time I thought I knew what would happen in the Flask / Marx storyline I got surprised by the next move. I look forward to the revelations that Monday will bring.

Linda wants to make a difference in one person. Letting Meg in on secret stashes may not be the thing to do. How much about Endtown laws do we know. Is “hoarding” secret stuff a violation of Endtown laws? What are the rules of scavenging? They all have to come through Security so hiding something secret would be an issue. The “Pantry” according to Flask may have been confiscated items scavengers may have been trying to bring in secretly but got found out. The rats gave Al a fit wanting to search him. And Al did have Cheezewhiz he put on weeds for Gustine. It may all go into one pot so to say. So keeping something secret may be illegal in the laws of Endtown. The rolls were not in the open. They were in a can. Oatmeal was given to Maude husband as a reward for good work but she does not share it everyone. So the rolls may have been the same for the previous occupant but would you openly state in Endtown you have such stuff? Might not be such a good idea. Could Mr. Hopper be checking for “contraband”? He goes around using the routine to check for things like that. I know its food but what are the laws of Endtown concerning such stuff? One for all and all for one. Or one for all and none for one.Every thing goes to the commune and dished out accordingly. Its one of those things not covered in the Endtown saga.

I think Meg jumped to conclusions about Linda’s motives because she felt very protective towards Hopper. She’s watched the man for a long time, and when customers become regulars in a restaurant, they become almost like family. So he means something to her too. It would have been better if she had asked “Why did you….”. But Endtown tempers might be short, in general..Life for them is unusually stressful, especially where food is involved. You don’t tease about food to people who are used to barely having enough to eat.

I like Meg. She also appears to have a kind heart. Her disheveled hairstyle suggests she’s easygoing and hard working.

Look at the wounded expression on Linda’s face. In the past, she judged the endtowners without looking at them as people. Now she’s being judged in the same manner. By her criticism Meg’s taught our koala another life lesson.

There is a “Poverty Cake” recipe that is circulating the internet. It’s based on one that was developed during the Great Depression, and uses no eggs.

I can’t help but notice certain parallels between certain name and certain forms of certain Endtowners. Linda “Koala” Kowalski…Maude “Heffer” Hefner…Mister Hopper…Professor Mallard…Philo Foxworthy. (I ignore Jake Jackrabbit as that name, in the context of “Endtown,” and the philosophy of last summer’s big meeting, is likely an assumed name.) Does that mean there’s some way to predict future forms?

Oh hope she helps but just cant shake the fact that she is being set up. My parents told tales from WWII of folks who would go around and turn in others for “hoarding”. You see in a time of crisis rules are set in place to keep things moving along. It is an all for one type of situation. But people are people. Some will not share what extra they may have. Reasons vary from price gouging, to making a quick buck on the side. Boy Scouts of the time were incouraged to turn in folks like that to the Civil Defense authorities. Citizens were encouraged to report. There even individuals who would go out and visit gas stations, restaurants and such to see if there were violations of rationing. They would look into it and if true had the authority to seize. Tire, rubber, metals, raw materials needed for the effort were not to be hoarded. Every thing was rationed. It was for the greater good but still strange to think you as a citizen could be turned in for keeping rationed items in a surplus. Sugar, flour, beef, gas, coffee all were rationed so someone having more than they were allowed “hoarding” the price for such action were steep. I hope Mr. Hopper is just looking for past experiences to feel better but I of course am suspicious. I know this is Endtown reality but Aaron does stay somewhat true to our reality.I have been refered to as a Pessimistic Optimistic person. I believe in the good but still hold back not just blindly running to it.

In an apcolapyse there would be sides chosen. Those that will take by force what they want killing anyone in their way. I stand against folks like that. I would be the one to support and protect a group just trying to get by working together as a group. I am not a farmer or builder but do know military tactics, police tactics, fully armed and prepared to protect those who want it. That would be the skills I would bring. Just feed me. I dont eat alot anyway. Spare what you can. Even it was just beans. In an Endtown reality I would chose a job of going topside with scavengers as protection. Keep watch for Topsiders. Engage them if necessary to protect the scavengers. I have seen weapons there. Sure I would probably be an anthro but whats wrong with that. I would be alive and quite happy with that.

Of course it wasn’t a “you” that bought up everything, it was the government—-and some of their rationing and price controls persisted into the 1950s. If somebody else decides what one’s fair price for goods and services is…

BREAKING NEWS. Aaron Neathery is in hospital with a recurrence of a leg infection. It is probable he will be there for less than a day, but still it is serious enough for intravenous antibiotics. There will be no new auction item, this week. Anyone who would like to pay for orders of prints that he can mail once he is better, or just send him some money as a benefaction, will help pay for the latest medical bills and possibly soften this latest setback.

Mr. Hopper’s ears are definitely of the dog variety. While some breeds of dogs have “stand up” wolf style ears, many of the scent hounds including Beagles, Basset Hounds, Blood Hounds, Golden Retrievers and English Setters have a flap style ear, like Mr. Hopper’s In some scent hounds, like Beagles and Bassets, the ears are long enough that they halp duct scent molecules to the dog’s nose. They also look real cute.
