Burl assumes that Bill lives on the sunny side of the street…while HE always gets the short end of the stick.
Part of his giant sense of entitlement is due to his persistent belief…his fear…. that life is unfair to him…that he never gets a break….If he lies, chisels, shirks and complains, it’s because he’s always having to make up for the bad hand he’s been dealt.
And he is convinced…. he knows …. that all the people in town, and even the _elements, _ like everyone else better than they like him.
On that last point, he may be correct….but it’s one of those things that you cause to happen by believing in it, and acting on that belief.
