I love the comic strip because he it generally doesn’t whine about the “latino” condition in the world and just shows them as a normal American family. Let’s not start bringing up racism.

Chita Rivera, Edward Villella. It is possible that many artists changed their names to something more “American,” and I don’t know who they might be without a lot more research. However, I agree there is a lack of Hispano- (and Latino-) AMERICAN artists, although there are other Spanish-speaking honorees. With the recent (as in past 15 years) of noted Hispano- and Latino- American accomplishments in the arts, there will be more recognized as they enter their elder years. I am more impressed with accomplishments and was thrilled when Maria Tallchief was honored – I didn’t even remember she was Native American – I just remembered her “Firebird.” I am usually in agreement with Srs. Cantu y Castellanos, but I don’t think it’s racist -just so many to choose from.

My thought is that the number of honorees is not necessarily racist, but the instant reaction and assumption of the receptionist is rather.

Um….with all due respect, are you suggesting that the committee select honorees based on ethnicity?

I might add that the selection committee is almost certainly made up of very liberal people who are steeped in the arts. I seriously doubt they would exclude anyone based on race, gender, or ethnicity.

Flake: Wait twenty years and see who’s the minority! With no majority in Texas, we already are. Of course, I can laugh, having always been one – Anglo-Saxon (I can’t find out which), Scot Celt, and Cherokee. Hybrid vigor is a good thing if it is natural rather than test-tube.

OH, so it’s Discrimination! that not alot of Hispanics have received that honor? God I thought that this strip was above all this Race card BS. Sadly it is not. PS how many people of Eastern European descent have received the honor, don’t know don’t care. Get over the race BS.

Joe is right. “Get over the race BS.” It is tiresome that some people continue to call “Hispanics” a race. It is not. It is a group of people lumped together because they speak a similar language. It is also tiresome that some people seem to think “whites” “Anglo-Saxons” and “Caucasians” are all the same. I happen to be Caucasian, but I am certainly not “Anglo-Saxon” and my skin color is actually darker than that of some light skinned “Blacks” and “Asians.” We are all the same people: Humans.

No, Sergio is NOT being racist—OR whiny!. He’s only recognizing it by the fact that the person on the other end of the line is assuming that he’s applying for the janitorial position BECAUSE he’s Hispanic. There’s racism right there: assuming that we’re suited only for menial help jobs instead of something better because of our ethnicity. He sees it for what it is, and so do I just by the comments I’m seeing here. The creators of the strip are pointing the racism we still face in society, and we’re crying about it because we’re STILL seeing and experiencing it. Stop the bigotry, take the time to actually know us, and then MAYBE we’ll stop griping about it.

Um…perhaps it just so happens there’s only been one Hispanic American who’s actually earned a Kennedy Center honor in the past 35 years. You can’t give these awards based on ethnicity.
