This is a different John from the sarcastic, buffoonish one we’re used to seeing. It’s hard for a man to open up his soul, and it’s kinda scarey when he does.
I remember when I used to love going to work and couldn’t wait to get back after a forced vacation. I worked at that job for 10 years before I moved to another town and had to find another job that I hated for 10 years. I am now retired now.
Even the most satisfying jobs become routine sometimes. I was very fortunate because in my one job i was able to do things relating to many areas of employer’s business.
Never never ever turn what you like doing for a hobby into a job for money. You will end up hating the thing you use to loving doing. I have seen it happen more than a few times.
Fact: 80+% of people working do NOT like their job. Women who are STAH moms look at an outside paying job as exciting. After a few years they regret it. Men think their wives at home have it made, till they get laid off, or retire. Satisfaction is elusive.
When I was a Junior in high school, I belonged to the Library Club. It was a thrill to help our in the library and take passes to the students in the study hall. It was great being amongst all those books, too. :-)
My dentist not only loves his job, he’s very good at it, and is surrounded by at least 5 pretty women that work for him, all day long. It’s (on average) $300 per regular filling. What’s not to love? ; )

It must get pretty boring looking at people’s teeth after a while but he makes good money for it at least.

I noticed yesterday that the date was 2-01, with no year mentioned. Today it says 2013. Is that significant?

John should consider himself lucky. Many people (maybe even most) have never, ever liked working.

I don’t get how John could be angry at Elly for getting a job. It is none of his business.
