For those who bash the “I before E except after C” rule, keep in mind that that rule is chiefly for if you’re trying to spell common verbs, like receive, believe, retrieve, conceive, deceive (and their derivatives: receipt, belief), etc. I know the rule does not apply to all words in the entire dictionary!
The pellet with the poison’s in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true! but it got changed when the Chalice from the palace was broken… So we must now remember… The pellet with the poison’s in the flagon with the dragon; the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true. Why are they always changing the rules?
It has been said that American English is the hardest language to learn as a second language. For that same reason, it also causes speakers of American English to have challenges learning any other language as a second language.
Which animated cartoon was it where CB went to the spelling bee and was trying to remember this rule? Snoopy came to the rescue with his mouth harp and played out the ‘musical’ rule helping CB remember!
Except of course it was announced recently that that “I before E except after C” is no longer a valid rule and shouldn’t be taught – there are too many words which violate that rule. German is so much easier in this respect: “I before E makes the sound E; E before I makes the sound I.” For examples of both see the word “Kreigspiel .”
hey folks how did a simple comic strip about spelling touch off a round of namecalling? really, whether a language has no consonants or vowels or a written alphabet, its still a language. if youre looking for a “verbal” sparring match so much that youre going to a peanuts comic strip of all places to start a fight…… get a life!

I before E except after C, Charlie Brown — unless it’s pronounced as in “eight,” “weigh,” and “neighbor” (exception to the exception: “weird”).

Forget about it, Charlie Brown. You’re not going to win anything if you can’t remember a simple little rule like that.

If I were you, Charlie Brown, I’d worry more about how a certain word ends in l-e and not e-l.
prasrinivara about 11 years ago
Don’t worry about that rule CB; the word you’ll get is one to which that rule doesn’t apply — but you’ll foul it up royally anyway!

It’s I before E except after dinner, or when pronounced as A on Thursday (but not any other day of the week).
