    The same GOP that considers compromise to be “do what we want, or else”?

    This cartoon trivializes an act of humanity and generosity our legislators rarely display. The GOP has not been reaching out to people like the man the New York Police Officer helped. They certainly haven’t thought such people were worth a greater investment of time or money in order to help them get off of the streets.And Obama has not asked for an unlimited credit card, he has asked for the same kind of common sense reinvestment in our infrastructure, schools, and people that brought Americans out of the first depression. He has frequently said the deficit is a threat to American security, but that in the immediate future, before we achieve that long term goal, we need to fix that which is broke now.We need people to reach out to their neighbors but this cartoon turns an act of kindness into an farce. Both parties need to work together, and when the media encourages division and sarcasm, it is easy for the rest of us to lower the standard to that which has been set for us.We are better than that, and this is the time of year to prove it.Respectfully,& Happy HolidayzeC.

    Unlimited debt ceiling? A Republican Congress raised the debt ceiling 6 times during the Bush Administration.

    @Howgozit:

    I would recommend you actually do some research on where a lot of this debt came from. Keep in mind that all moneys that were authorized for both of Dubya’s wars were off the books. Remember that none of that money came from the Pentagon’s budget, but instead was authorized by “emergency funding”, which kept this money off the books. Obama rightly added it to the books, which of course made him look like a spendthrift instantly, but it needed to be done.

    And another example of the previous administration cooking the books: I think it was 2005 or 2006 that I received an e-mail from Medicare, telling me that I would not be paid for any services I provided between 9/22 and 9/30, which is the end of the Fed’s fiscal year. Not just me: all doctors, all hospitals, all caregivers whose services would normally be paid for. Not to worry, though: they would pay their bills after 10/1. No interest or penalty, though. Accept it.

    Anyone with half a brain would be able to tell that this was a trick to make the deficit look less frightening. It’s easy to look solvent when you choose not to pay what you owe. Of course, I’m sure that when the “final” reporting was recorded, a way was found to move that payment back to its proper year, after no one was looking.

    This is not to say, “He did it too.” It is to say that some people are willing to ignore certain malfeasance, including this cartoonist, depending on which political party is considered responsible.

    There will be no compromise, no help, no final deal if we continue to point fingers and ignore the present. I recognize that tax increases for the wealthy will not pay our bills. On the other hand, it can help, and the original reason for keeping their taxes low (that they will create jobs) doesn’t hold water. The idea of not raising taxes but closing loopholes doesn’t work unless we specify the loopholes we’re intending to close. And I am willing to believe that Grover and his puppets will consider a closed loophole to be a tax increase.

    I look forward to anyone who proves me wrong.

    Lisa—-another excellent toon…the barefoot homeless man given new shoes by the NYPD officer is still barefoot…he decided to “save” the valuable shoes and is demanding “a slice of the pie” from earnings of the viral internet photo!-Obama is demanding that the GOP agree to vote for an UNconstitutional law giving the president the Power given Congress to control US government debt…!!!(and here is a FACT=GOP taxpayers have already helped KEEP Obama in a royal lifestyle to the tune of $1.5 Billion each year…far more than a pair of shoes! Obama & family are heading for another vacation in Hawaii to the tune of another $4 million taxpaid costs.)(another fact…Voters only gave Obama a 2.8% majority in the popular vote 2012! Why do Dems pretend it was a “Landslide”???)

    Senate floor, March 16, 2006, President Obama:“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US government can’t pay its own bills….(my omission)…“This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy…”(quote Ansonia post)-what happened to Obama’s mind/brain in the time between this March 2006 quote and his campaign for Prez in 2007/2008?can voters spell “HYPOCRITE”?from George Washington through GW Bush the total accumulated federal debt was $10.6 Trillion, most added since WW2….but Obama is #1 spender/debtor prez….November 2012 the total reached $16.3 trillion….less than 4 full years regime added $5.7 Trillion debt….but dems blame Bush…?What are Democrats drinking/smoking, etc???

    “Obama has borrowed more than the combined presidencies of Washington through Clinton,”

    That must make the bankers happy if it were true?
