“Supposed to win”? When did you guys make that rule up? “Almost even” aka “in a minority”. And do Governors “own” their Governorships? I thought they were given them on trust. Glad to see you guys are still living in your own reality bubble, though. Makes things a lot easier ….

My 1st guess was the Napoleanic retreat from Russia. My 2nd guess was the Mormon’s Donner pass episode.

First, you have to translate into English. In English Conserv means “likely” rather than “supposed”. In English “supposed” means something like “was expected to (by someone) but didn’t”, as in “You were supposed to take out the garbage, what happened?” Then, once the translation has been done properly, you have to look at the logic. It’s true that incumbents often win, but in recent times, both Bush I and Carter failed to win re-election. A lot of the posters here were saying before the election that Obama was Carter II. They were wrong, but now they don’t want to admit their error.

I always imagined they would be happy in Somalia. Don’t they have small government and low taxes?Don’t hey have wars and enslave women?Give a Republican a one way ticket to Somalia to make America a better place.

Your facts are a bit skewed. The Republicans LOST seats in both the Senate and the House. Now it’s not quite the calamity Danziger portrays, but unless the Republican leadership takes a long hard look at what they are doing wrong, this scene isn’t too far away.

Interesting article on “Yahoo” from their liberal but reasonably fair editor. I lived through the period he talked about but forgot the details.

“Don’t get cocky, Democrats: The post-Romney GOP looks just like you did two decades ago.”

Danziger’s cartoon is rich with gloating. His artwork accurately captures the mood among many conservatives and in so doing, fails to reach out a hand to bring hurt and bitter neighbors back to a place where bipartisan discussion can be carried. He also fails to recall the US Revolutionary war general, I think it was Greene, who led Corwallis’s troops deep into North Carolina. While the Americans retreated from every battle, the well planned confrontations streched thin the British thin the Royalist supply lines an forced Cornwallis himself to withdraw north to Yorktown, Va. where he ultimately surrended. To Retreat is not the same as to Surrender. Britain is now one of our strongest allies, as is Japan and Germany. Our nation has been able to befriend most of the countries with whom we’ve fought in the past. Why is is so hard to befriend our friends and neighbors who simply disagree with us politically. We all believe in the Constitution.Mr. Danziger’s cartoon is unhelpful and our nation deserves media and legislators willing to help buld bridges between citizens instead of dividing us to their own ends.Respectfully,C.

You have a pretty good memory for our early history, but not so much for our more recent history. Obama TRIED reaching across the aisle in 2009, and what was the response from the right? Rush Limbaugh declaring “I hope he fails!”Mitch McConnell declaring, “Our main poltical goal should be to deny Barack Obama a second term.”A record number of filibusters in the SenateAnd let’s nor forget the Birther movement.Or the constant ranting by conservatives that Obama is a Socialist, a Marxist, A Muslim and God only knows what else. And that’s just for starters.Respect? You want some, then try SHOWING some. Why should we reach out a hand to the same people who only tried to bite it off last time? No, now it’s the Repubs turn to reach across the aisle.

    Otherwise, forget it.

The very best thing I’ve heard from the right since the election is that they think the reason they lost is because they weren’t conservative enough. They plan to move even further to the right where they will drive off even more minorities, and even more white voters (the ones that think). I find this very encouraging.

" I do wish the GOP would stick to finances & keep their mouths shut about the female uterus & gays."

Just be glad they haven’t tried talking about the MALE uterus. I understand Todd Akin, with his comprehensive knowledge of human physiology, considers himself an authority on the subject.

No People! Obviously, considering the Right’s identity as the Oligarchy/ Conservative corporate superiority Party, it’s the German Army’s retreat from Russia. Would be easy to compare with an actual picture.

babka: Don’t assume Texas. The last time some idiot tried to reestablish the Republic of Texas, it took one Ranger and six sheriff’s deputies a half hour to restore it to the United States. And they were trying successfully to avoid any casualties.

this is a parody of the classic painting of Napoleon’s retreat from Russia in 1812. He entered Russia with 400,000+ troops, mostly from conquered nations, esp. Germans). He won every battle, but was trapped in Moscow without food (the Russians burned everything).

By late October Russian weather is ‘rather brisk", and his plodding, poorly-organized retreating force was cut up by Cossacks….Napoleon arrived in Poland with fewer than 1/4 of his men, Not a “rout”, exactly, but one of history’s great military disasters, for sure.

Soon thereafter, the French lost the Befreiungskriege (Prussian Liberation Wars) to Prussian forces.

Tchaikovsky’s overture “1812”(written ca. 1890) depicts the invasion, battles, and ultimate liberation of “Mother Russia”. Always nice to see you here, Morty!

This is almost certainly a parody of Napolean’s disastrous retreat from Moscow during the war of 1812. Around 75% of Napolean’s half million man force died during the invasion and eventual retreat due moistly to starvation, hypothermia, disease. Luckily the General himself had plenty of food and warm shelter during the retreat (fancy that!) When hope was lost, he abandoned his dying men and fled to Paris, where he began shoring up his power base. Ah, the glory of war! It never changes, does it?
