White Castle “sliders” or as we aficionados call them, “belly bombers”, are a food group unto themselves. Small and extremely tasty. Steam grilled, square hamburger patty, pickle, and steam grilled onions on what amounts to a dinner roll, which has been warmed over the grilling onions. Add a small slice of cheese and I’m in heaven. As a kid I could eat ten of them with a milkshake and their crinkle cut fries. Nowadays it’s three or four, but they still taste the same.
At one time we lived on a gravel road in a small rural town about 30 miles from the nearest fast food place. That place happened to be a McD’s. So all the trash (bags, cups, etc.) that was thrown out along the road was theirs. Then someone opened a White Castle at the same intersection as the McD’s. Almost overnight the trash changed to White Castle.
Driving back home for Thanksgiving one year I grabbed a bag of White Castles on my way out of town. Bad idea when (1) the weather is too cold to keep the window down, and (2) you don’t know how far it is to the next rest stop.
I have never had a White Castle. My son recently tried one because he was curious. He said that they were not worth talking about. Guess I will never have any. No interest.
Send ‘em to Phoenix, Agnes! Either they’re going to be miserable in that poor excuse for a “city,” or they’re not intelligent enough to be worthy of your lord queenliness.
I grew up in ‘burb west of Chicago. We had Prince Castle which was very similar to WC, long before McD – loved their burgers with the chopped grilled onions and their unbelieveable thick shakes. A Wednesday nite treat since my Dad golfed that night. McD’s pretty much shut them down.
I’ve had burgers from CA to NY to FL to Washington State and, say what you will about L.A., it’s burger mecca. Until Joe gave up the Sunset Grill (next to the Guitar Center in W Hollywood), they were the best burgers in town. Now, try 25 degrees, also on Sunset but toward Laurel Canyon Blvd.
Thanks to everyone for enlightening info on White Castle. It does not exist over here. Here’s a thought…. don’t shorten it to WC. That abberivation is for the Water Closet. (English term). Her Lord Queenliness should send those outcasts to Phoenix. The Coyotes need all the help they can get to be free of Bettman’s grip. (come to think of it – Agnes, as Lord Queen should banish Bettman maybe even Fehr. Send them to Mongolia!)

My friend loves WC. I agree to get them for her as long as it’s warm enough to keep all of the windows in the car rolled down.Me? Not so much.

Whenever this expat South Sider makes it back to Chicago, first stop is the White Castle on Western Ave. Once a year is enough, however.

Be more specific: Send them to Cleveland. Reputedly one of the worst cities in the U.S., despite the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

As the saying goes— First prize is a week in Cleveland, second prize is two weeks in Cleveland, third prize is two weeks in Cleveland in the winter.

If you want a great burger, go to a place owned and operated by Greeks.
