the near-limitless potential for jokes at the expense of the Vatican has left me in a quandary of biblical proportions….so let’s hope the boys don’t grow up and attend Penn State on a Football Scholarship…..

Fortunately for the guy in the miter, the statute of limitations ran out on this five hundred years ago.

“Hiya Sir, you wanna play with us?”

That picture is just too similar to a raunchy greeting card.

Mbrandt will chime in with all the stats, but this is the story of how St Nicholas saved the lives of the 3 little boys. Story is that they were travelling to school/university and stopped for the night. The unscrupulous innkeeper, seeing that they were wealthy, killed them to rob them, and then being a thrifty sort of serial killer, cut them up and put them in brine (to be later served to his guests, I guess.) St. Nicholas (patron saint of actors, children, spinsters, pick pockets, pawn brokers and prostitutes—fact) happened along, knew all at a glance, and resurrected them (intact, of course).

Italian priests in custard, discussing vital matters of the day. These lads from a seminary near Cremona, have been practicing for well over a year.

Click-to-enlarge image can be found here.Three Legends of Saint Nicholas (link shows his Wikipedia page) is one panel in the larger (different coloration) work shown in its current-location page. That was part of a large altarpiece described in 4 pages of an online book, which goes into considerable detail. The altarpiece was reassembled and on display for 106 days in 1992. @orinoco womble has provided the basics of the legend above (thanks!). This has a longer version; in France, they were (search for butcher) 3 small children at play. The artist’s Wikipedia page and collection (many more under Subcategories at each level).Second of the 4 works by this artist (under various nationalities), that have, so far, appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog, to also appear here.

The Saint thought it was a laundry tub, stumbled on the body parts whilst searching for his socks. The re-assembly was accomplished as are all “miracles” -
