Jef is like one or two other web cartoonists, in making me run for the (urban) dictionary. Thanks to Alexikakos for saving me the trouble this time.

The phrase “to bogart” is hardly new. I first heard it used in the movie Easy Rider. Specifically the song “Don’t bogart that joint my friend” by The Fraternity of Man.

Not in my home. My kids were (are) football fanatics. Especially, where the Pittsburgh Steelers are concerned.

The word “bogart” is even in the Oxford English Dictionary. They say “to force, coerce, bully; to intimidate” and “to appropriate greedily or selfishly; to take or use most of, to steal.”

It’s just a comic.

My husband has a friend whose family has five TVs. For three people. One of whom is a baby.

as talked about in the definition posted, it comes from Bogart’s holding of a cigarette and not using it. In this situation the dad is actively using the tv to watch football so it isn’t a correct usage of the verb. Unless that dad were to fall asleep while watching the game, which is possible.

It means to hog something or not share or pass it on after your turn, and was mostly used to marijuan since you were suppsed to take a hit and pass it to the next person. It never meant to “hold and not smoke.”
