The reThuglicans sold him a bill of goods and that was one of the dirtiest tricks they ever did. And still they ignored his advice (“If you break it, you own it”) and screwed up a big portion of the world mostly just to keep oil billionaires happy.
So, taking into account his exemplary examples of good works in the years after his part in the Iraq War fiasco, does he at best merit a long stretch In Purgatory instead of the place further down? Hold off until then his placement in St. Peter’s official book of hagiography.
I think General Colin Powell doesn’t completely deserve all the harshness he’s received. He was a pawn given false information. Should he have known better at the time? Perhaps. But he did have the decency to repudiate his own actions and was summarily dumped and disgraced by the very people who manipulated him. But that is the Republican Way; while demanding unquestioning loyalty from their followers, it’s understood that followers will be gleefully thrown under the bus when convenient. General Powell has much to answer for, but so do those who so shamefully used his integrity and reputation against him.
People don’t understand certain jobs. A lawyer, for instance, has to defend a client to the best of their ability, even if they know that client is guilty of heinous crimes. Generals and cabinet members serve at the Presidents pleasure. Their job is to give the best advice and then guide the country through the Presidents decided course of action.
Directly across the street from me the people that live there have a huge trump sign in their picture window. During the summer a tree branch’s leaves hide it from my view. In the Fall when the branch looses it’s leaves a bit of window frame work hides the “T.” :-) It reads Rump. (chuckle)
At the time of his speech Bush was saying that he only was going to war if Iraq didn’t allow inspectors in to search for WMD. He may have hoping that there would be a last minute chance to stop the war. Otherwise he was being a good solider obeying orders.

The thing about an afterlife is that EVERYBODY gets there, one way or another. This is what my mother used to call “A mixed cursing”

Powell feared that his monumental blunder in pushing the Bush agenda would be an indelible stain on his reputation. He was right.

I more “respected” Powell than otherwise, but I don’t mind Clay’s take on this at all.
The deaths of public figures tend to inspire lazy cartooning, even when their legacies (such as Powell’s) were mixed.

No Vietnamese in that crowd? Was the US war on Vietnam less based on lies and imperialism (or hegemony) than the war on Iraq?
