Remembering the flower in the National Guardsman’s rifle while protesting Viet Nam, I was in ‘Nam and saw what was actually happening, and liked that gesture. I came home and went to rallies to pass on some truths to groups at my college and later University demonstrations. Which, having trained folks in riot control in the Army, the excessive use of “protective gear” does inflame more than calm demonstrators. When you lose sight of the fact that cops are also humans, and take away their humanity with masks etc., you’ve screwed the pooch of peaceful resolve.
