He didn’t (she took it herself) and it wasn’t an apple.

Redeemd is right, Eve took the fruit of her own accord, after the serpent told her it would make her like God. And nowhere is it called an apple, outside of popular culture.

Genesis 3: 5-6 ” For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”

The bible makes it plain that it was Satan who spoke through the the serpent, seducing Eve into disobedience to God’s command. In turn, Eve induced Adam to take the same rebellious course. (Ge 3:1-7; 2Co 11:3) As a consequence of Satan’s use of the serpent, the Bible gives Satan the title “Serpent,” which came to signify “deceiver”; he also became “the Tempter” (Mt 4:3) and a liar, “the father of the lie.”—Joh 8:44; Re 12:9.

God also pronounced a curse when saying to the serpent in Eden: “Upon your belly you will go and dust is what you will eat [or, bite] all the days of your life.”—Ge 3:14

I do believe Lew was making a joke contingent on this cartoon’s premise of snakes not having hands, and was not trolling or asking a serious question. It was rhetorical, not rhetoric.
