Living in San Francisco, I’m sensitive to accusations of building where nothing should be built. But for 100-plus years, the physics of tall buildings on fault lines has been taken into consideration, and the 1989 quake (which I experienced first-hand), could have been a lot worse than it was.
Short-term, of course there was need for outside assistance. But I don’t recall anyone begging for massive Federal assistance to help us rebuild (our official city flag features a phoenix rising from the flames).
