The Keystone pipeline allows a Canadian oil company to pipe dirty tar sands oil to Texas for refining and sale on the world market, while making the US assume all the risk and cleanup for leaks and contamination of the Ogallala Aquifer that services the entire upper Midwest.

Canada wants to run their tar sands oil through our backyard on its way to China and India. This oil is unfit for American consumption, but we chose to make it a political issue instead of a disaster waiting to happen.

First, the XL pipeline will carry oil, not natural gas. Second, the XL pipeline is not going to Germany.

Funny how Bok FORGETS to mention that the Keystone Pipeline was going to be used to transport OIL SAND SLUDGE, not OIL, to refineries in Texas where it was to be processed into fuel THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN SOLD TO CUSTOMERS IN THE FAR EAST. NONE of it was for American Consumption.

The Keystone Pipeline project in question is actually the fourth-phase extension of the already existing Keystone Pipeline which runs from the tar sands oil fields starting in Hardisty, Canada (midway between Edmonton and Calgary) to Houston, Texas. The 2,151 miles of existing pipeline already has the capacity to transport 700,000 barrels of oil per day into the US, delivering it to refineries located along the route and a major storage and distribution facility in Cushing, Oklahoma. The fourth phase of the pipeline would have created a shortcut picking up the line in Alberta and rerouting it through Montana and South Dakota to rejoin existing pipeline in Nebraska.The number of jobs that this pipeline was associated with has ranged from the 28,000 that former president Trump claimed it would create back in 2017 when he reinstated the project permit, to the 11,000 number that has been touted by the GOP’s official Twitter account after President Biden revoked the permit, to the 1,000 jobs that Calgary-based TC Energy (the project owner) says were actually impacted by the order.

Deliberately muddying the waters again, Mr Bok?

The US cannot prevent the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline; all the US can do is impose sanctions against countries which buy gas from Russia in order to protect US foreign interests. In this case, it’s concern about Russia using its competitive bulk to shut out other countries, particularly Ukraine. This is a bit awkward when the country you’d have to impose sanctions on is an ally — in this case, Germany. But the US made the threat anyway. In the end Berlin and Washington were able to reach an agreement that Germany promises to continue supporting US strategic interests in this part of the world by imposing costs on Russia if they do act anti-competitively with respect to Ukraine. (Yes, there’s some hypocrisy in that, but this is international politics; everything is done for strategic advantage, not morals.) With Germany’s agreement, the US is refraining from imposing sanctions upon it. Ukraine’s still not happy, and I don’t blame them, but I’m not sure this could’ve ended any differently — or that it would matter who was sitting in the White House.

Meanwhile, Keystone XL is directly in the purview of the US executive branch, because it is passing through multiple US states to sell Canadian petroleum to US businesses. Unlike Nord Stream 2, it therefore requires the permission of the US federal government. It has been blocked on two grounds: environmental damage (it’s not a gas pipeline, but a petroleum pipeline) and violation of treaties signed many years ago with native communities. On top of that is the fact that the US doesn’t actually profit much from Keystone XL; it just makes it easier for Canadian businesses to sell us oil.

There are more than 85 thousand miles of crude oil pipeline in the USA.If you add in natural gas pipelines it becomes Millions of miles.I think we have enough pipe already, don’t need Canadian oil adding more.

Despite the financial benefits to Russia, Germany and other western European nations need a reliable source of natural gas beyond that obtainable from nearby sources. Maybe in the future wind and solar (and even nuclear) can replace the gas, but for now it is necessary.
