My mom was a very chatty lady and I always knew to call her when I had some spare time (i.e. not at work). There were many times when I called her for a reason, and I ran out of time to bring up my topic. Miss her so much!

I have a friend like this. Whenever she calls, I know to allot at least an hour to listen to her. I might get a word or two in edgewise, but that’s about it. If I want to tell her about what I’ve been doing, I have to email her.
Back in the early days of our company, before we could afford to hire support staff, I had to do the return support calls. Some of those calls would take 2 to 3 hours to track down the issue and fix it or train the user on how not to make that mistake again. One hour would have been way too short. I never did like companies that tried to get into time management. When you work in software development there is no way to predict how long anything will take as you have to deal with a lot of interruptions or even changes in priority. At one company I worked for I was advised not to answer calls between two specified times. That was hilarious as my job was answering the help line for internal calls. I am sure the other departments would have been ‘thrilled’ if I had followed that rule.

It should read on rule #1 “allot one hour to return business calls from the previous day. Personal calls returned in personal time!
