Cathy: ... so, what do you think? Irving: What do I think about what? Cathy: What do you think about the giant emotionally-wrenching talk we had this week about the link between a happy marriage and one's commitment to picking up after one's self?? Irving: Oh, I didn't think about it today. I was playing golf. Cathy: You golfed in silence for four hours and didn't think about it?? Irving: No. When I golf, I just think about golf. Cathy: You didn't golf yesterday. Irving: Yesterday I worked. When I work, I think about work. Cathy: Your mind never drifts off and thinks about other things? Irving: No! Work time's work time! Play time's play time! TV time's TV time! Cathy: Incredible... how can the same person be so good at compartmentalizing and so bad at putting anything away?? Irving: Easy answer. It's sandwich time! To do: Him: 1. get up. 2. take shower. 3. get dressed. 4. eat breakfast. 5. play golf. Her: 1. get up. 2. obsess. 3. obsess. 4. obsess. 5. obsess. 6. obsess. 7. obsess.
The trick to that is simple. Think about what your doing when your doing it. When it is done, move on. Cleaning up the mess is what other people are supposed to think about doing when they do it.
