The kitchen was in need of a renovation anyway.

Hobbes’ tail hasn’t gone all bushy yet so it can’t be an emergency. :)

An Emergency or not is merely a perspective in the eyes of the beholder.

Beyond emergency, as one of six kids, was we “gotta hide out in them dere hills because there’s no way to explain this one.”

Specifically, I recall a fight as young teenagers where one threw the other straight back into a hallway wall right between the two studs that took out four feet of plaster and board. Had to be pulled out which suspended our “discussion” as enemies became band-of-brothers allies.

After talking over strategy to avoid the repercussions we had one of us tripping and falling and the other saw it happen. I don’t know how we sold it when they came home but it saved us…for that time.

Where’s his mum? Hope she can swim. For this escapade Calvin may be up the creek without a paddle (unless Mum is into corporal punishment).

Creepy… Last evening I was out mowing the lawn and my wife came out waving her arms for me to come quickly. The kitchen sink drain had loosened and water was pouring out of the cabinet below.

A couple of years ago my son woke me in the middle of the night with a similar situation in the bathroom. I asked him if he would have waited that long if it had been a fire? I did get two new bathrooms and a new downstairs kitchen from the insurance company.

I suppose using the garbage disposal as a cement mixer is really not a good option.

Yes. Plumbing can go wrong really fast. Mom is probably doing something in the back yard, talking to a neighbor or even has run to the store on a quick errand.

This was years before “Captain Zap Brannigan” was interrupted by his first officer with “something important”. “Get back to me when it’s an emergency.” (Sound of spacecraft hitting space iceberg.)

I see some “shut off the water” comments, but if you look, the faucet isn’t running, Calvin somehow managed to make the sink back up, so this water is coming up from the drain, I’m not even sure how he did that, it might not even be his fault.

Where on earth is that boy’s mother?!? Calvin is six years old and ex-tremely ….. imaginative and rambunctious. When you have a kid like that who’s very well known for making his own kind of “fun” when he’s bored that is (or has the potential to be) destructive (even if it isn’t done maliciously on purpose), you can’t take your eyes off them for a single second because anything can, will, and does happen. Case in point: a now-flooded kitchen!

P.S.: I didn’t have a kid like that but my husband’s sister sure did! Made both Calvin and Dennis the Menace look like absolute ANGELS in comparison to him. Quite frankly, I don’t know how he made it to adulthood without killing himself in the process but somehow, he did! ;-)

So crazy to read the comments and consider that this was “normal” parenting just 20-30 years ago, when the strip first ran. It was typical for kids to run around largely left to their own devices all day long during the summer months. Somehow the vast majority managed not to die or cause minor disasters.
