Right about now, Calvin’s Mom should walk up behind him with a rolled up newspaper.

It’s the mid-80s or later and Calvin is living in a home with no VCR and a rotary phone. His parents really are Luddites.

Wait till Dad comes home.

Good thing he’s home at least. Dad may be mad, but better there than being in the jungle near a chameleon or something.

They can partly, and they cannot partly.

What shall Calvin do, when he needs Dad so urgently!!

How did Calvin get the phone off the hook?

Even if they had smart phones then, Calvin is so small he wouldn’t weigh enough for the touch screen to know he’s there.

My parents switched over to touch tone dialing when they first got on the Internet with a dial up modem. Even then, I think some old modems could handle pulse (rotary phone type) dialing. For phone calls, if you weren’t calling 911, then the extra time to dial wasn’t really an inconvenience

Calvin and Hobbes still seems so fresh (at least to me) that you forget it’s from the other side of a big technological leap. Then something like this reminds you. By the end of the strip, the house does have a computer but it’s not on the Internet, and I doubt if anyone in it has used a mobile phone yet.

Since when was ABC 7?

Calvin needs a lot of couch time.

Calvin: “Bz-bz-bzzzz!! Bzzz, BZZZ! Bz-BZZZ-BZ-BZZZZZ-BZZ!” (Calvin’s Mom sneaks up behind him with a flyswatter — SWAT!!! — right on the bottom! — and then hauls him off to his room…!).

For the current “techie” class, most don’t even remember when push button phones actually had real “push buttons” much less rotary dials…

Wow rotary dial phones how quaint. Not so much dialing 911 in a real emergency however

Imagine if his boss was on the line and dad said that to him.
