Far too true, Calvin, but far too deep for a six-year-old.

The amount of forest land in the United States has been essentially stable since 1907.

Me too. One solid block of “woods” right in the middle of my small town. Not a park, just trees and many paths. All gone of course. Sorry, Calvin…..

We typically seem to assume that other life “out there” is more intelligent than us. Sadly, it’s equally possible (allowing that an equal lack of evidence is a valid measurement) that they are as dumb as we are about certain things. I hope not, though.

I recently found my pamphlet about the Spruce Goose. When I told my co-worker who is interested in airplanes, he said he thought it was now in Oregon. I said “Yes. They did that to show where all the wood went when they chopped down the forests there”.

When I was a kid I belonged to the “Junior Forest Wardens” — an outfit sponsored by the big forest companies. We were taught a lot about responsible practices like “patch logging” where you harvested small enough areas that the surrounding forest could re-establish itself.

Then our sponsors went out and clear-cut the whole Province!

There was “The Wow Signal” in 1977. Very brief artificial radio signal from the direction of Sagittarius. Some wise being on the other end probably cut it off.

@Night-Gaunt49You should know by now that I am concerned about the environment as anybody.Plus, because where I live, my carbon foot-print is one-tenth of some living in, let’s say, Texas.

Most of the local aliens avoid our planet: it only makes good sense to stay away from a race that points weapons at its own. (I stole that from The Dark Knight Strikes Back – thanks, Frank Miller.)

Why I called Calvin an “environmental freak”:For a six year old who is all id, it is pleasant surprise to see he cares about the danger of extinction of other species.

One of Arthur Clarke’s short stories was about an alien expeditionary team, sent out to survey planets and make recommendations. Back on the home planet, they reported that Earth was off limits, its inhabitants totally unacceptable. When asked why, they answered, “Because they test nuclear weapons in the atmosphere!”.
