Admit it, Calvin — you just want to spend time with Susie.
Hasn’t he noticed that this is pretty much what his parents do?
I like the way he thinks.
Actually, Calvin, that’s true of any job. Even if you’re your own boss, you still get that sort of treatment from customers and clients!
Or get married.
He’d be in if it were Calvinball.
Nice thought, Calvin…but you should really join the Navy…my son did and he loved it… ;)
Go for the coach.
look just the first nice chatting…Calvin and Susie
My thoughts exactly, Calvin. That, and the fact that many of the sanctioned “sports” were for bullies in training, or were coached by one.
Start of love to Susi!!
Calvin’s thinking mirrors my own (when it comes to sports anyway) when I was his age. I always thought it strange that people got so upset and put so much emotion into a GAME. It just never seemed that important to me.
I love all that stuff about sports.
Calvin and Susie on the teeter totter having a conversation. Cute.
I can just see Hobbes singing:
Susie and Calvin sitting in a treeK-i-s-s-i-n-g …
Calvin assumes the Army will TAKE him.
Calvin resonates. I loved baseball and was a pretty good player as a kid. I went to watch a friend play Little League once and between the coaches acting like de facto Pattons and overwrought parents yelling at their kids, it didn’t look like fun at all (although the uniforms looked cool enough). Never signed up myself and stuck with playing in a vacant lot with my buddies instead. And I still love baseball.
My kids were just like old Mom, Square pegs. I encouraged that. Today’s oak is just yesterday’s nut that stood it’s ground.
I don’t think Calvin’s dislike of baseball is confined to organized teams. He never socializes with ANY other boys on ANY level—no games at all.
Unless if you become a professional baseball player, then you can make millions.
People get paid to be in the army? Since when?
… or get a job.
Personally, I think Calvin just described Real Life. The only thing that changes is who tells you what to, how to and when to do it!
Wait till you get married
Wait, wasn’t he afraid of getting infested with cooties & girl germs yesterday?
They’re not arguing???
I must be dreaming…
Calvin has a point. Let’s get paid!
Try telling that to those of us who were only ever deemed good enough at organized sports to be bench warmers. No thanks. I’ll go do what I’m good at and let the sports bullies beat each other up.
I always hated baseball. You’re either standing around in the hot sun or sitting around in the hot sun. Not much actual “playing” to speak of.
This arc still bugs me. How could Calvin be the only boy in his class not interested in baseball?
I second the comment of Meh-thodology. I never had any use for ball sports either.
Beetle Bailey…the Early Years…
I have nothing against playing sports and even the competition. I do have lots against the money that is spent on it — from little league on up. In Detroit (remember the city is bankrupt) we are going to build a new hockey arena and tax dollars are going to cover most of it ($324 million at last reading). We can’t even keep the lights on around here but there is money for a new sports arena no matter what. And I believe I heard someone lament that it will only be used about 40 nights a year — such a deal.
I always liked this strip because it’s one of the few that show Calvin and Susie just talking peacefully.
Calvin. The classic Bohemian. There’s room for everyone. Bully boy too. Everyone needs a mindless drone w a strong back and who can’t think his way out of a paper bag. Back to the future.
