Don’t hold your breath.
Or not, Calvin.
no, even then it doesn’t make sense…
No it doesn’t make sense, even more so when you are old.
Yes, a Song Sparrow I think. BW has drawn Song Sparrows in the strip before. The big brown spot on the breast is the giveaway.
best strip ever
If you have the 10th anniversary book, Watterson explains the inspiration for this particular strip.
Good bye, my friend and fly well!!
I was just surprised he didn’t poke it with a stick.
I thought this was beautiful, and I’m glad it wasn’t funny. This is why I’ve always loved this strip so much — there’s so much more to it than humor.
Either he is wrong or else I never grew up.
As they say in Acapulco, life is a beach and then you dive.
Someone once said we all live to die
a beautiful on weekend……….
Life is what happens to you when you are busy making plans.Anon
This is one of the few strips where you want to take Calvin in your arms (and tell him: Not a chance, particularly not in the US, given the way you deal with Obamacare, treat your veterans, blow sugar up the rear of the rich, let the weak die by the roadside and continue to enact open racism (re Miss USA-tweets)). Come on, flamers!

C&H is consistently funny and creative, making its forays into serious issues that much more effective…compare and contrast to strips that are daily slogs through gloom and depression for its own sake. I won’t name names, they know who they are..
We live our lives best if we are able to have a continual awareness of our mortality — but in the back of our minds, not in the front most of the time. If we see our lives as a gift that is fragile but precious, this helps us to see the lives of others in the same light.

It makes sense when one ceases to believe it has to make “sense”. Accept reality for what it is and get on with it.
no. it doesn’t make sense when we’re grown up, either.
You shouldn’t take life quite so seriously, Calvin. Nobody gets out of it alive, anyway.
I quote my grandmother. After listening to me complain or comment on something really petty, she would lean back in her chair, take a deep breath and say: “And then you die”.
Life is nature’s way of keeping meat fresh…
Live the moment like it’s your last.
Still waiting, for that “making sense” thing to happen.
I’m 55. I’ll let you know when life starts making sense.
That is a beautiful drawing of the bird in the first panel.
I agree with everything Calvin says too.
Which is quite rare.
Wonder if the folks at the Library know why his books are so popular all of a sudden……
Decades after the original release of this C+H came the song The Gull & I, poem by John William Carroll, music by Reuben Butchart & The Millworkers. The song sprang to mind after reading this time. I don’t think these comments allow links, so. . . listen free at reubenbutchart dot bandcamp dot com /track/the-gull-and-i
It sounds to me like Calvin already has it figured out. He just doesn’t realize it yet.
No matter how many times Suzy invites him.
No, it never will.
Who the hell is talking about the tea party?
Anyway, I’m 23 and life makes sense to me. There are still a few unanswered questions I have, but mostly…I’m alright.
HATE? Kind of a strong word there, don’t you think? Esp. since I assume you never met these people in real life?
Republicans and Democrats are Politicians way of dividing the people of the country against eachother while they rob them blind.
The beak looks like a Cardinal to me, and since it’s in black and white, it could be.
i wanna cry
It disgusts me how people can use a forum like this to spew political rants.
I love Calvin ,because it dose.
If growing up means losing your ability to grieve over a dead bird, I’m glad I never grew up.
We found a dead kestrel recently. :(
Just flag Omnius and forget about him.
There are elements of comedy in all good Tragedies and elements of tragedy in all good Comedies (and comic strips).
Just kidding? Whew! Because I (in this “dream” state or whatever) cannot conceive awake-ness (i.e., consciousness) being equal to non-existence. If this is so, how can a “dream” ever exist, unless dreaming = consciousness = existence?
