Calvin didn’t realize that there was still one more step to go. The discovery floored him.

Steven Wright describes the opposite of Calvin’s situation:“You know how it is when you’re walking up the stairs, and you get to the top, and you think there’s one more step? I’m like that all the time.”

Damage Assessment: Physical damage will take less time to fix than the embarassment of missing the last step. Fortunately, he’s young so both will heal quickly. Stairs tend to do more damage as we get older.

This process becomes familiar as we push into the frontier of the Seventh Decade.Just a week ago I had to learn – very quickly – how to fly.The landing was not uneventful, but it WAS pretty graceful … even if I have to say so myself, cuz nobody else was around to appreciate it.

@JohnnyDiego:Here is Linus’s first attempt at steps, followed by the one that you were remembering.Click here: Peanuts (October 22, 1953)Click here: Peanuts (April 29, 1954)You had it correct, except that Linus didn’t have his blanket yet. That appeared five weeks later, in the following strip:Click here: Peanuts (June 1, 1954)Note that Charles Schulz used the word “security” in this first strip with the blanket. Later it came to be known as Linus’s “security blanket.”

@ Hobbes, My eldest daugter, born 1963, had a security blanket and she used to carry it round exactly like Linus! Thumb in mouth and when it was washed she used to sit under the washline and hold onto the corner of it; just like Linus! Do you have that one in your system, Hobbes?

@JoanHelen:It’s great to hear from you again, because I was wondering whether you were still out there. I see now that you’ve been commenting on other strips, but Calvin and Hobbes is the only one where I follow the comments. I hope things are going well in South Africa. Here is the Peanuts strip that you asked about:Click here: Peanuts (August 16, 1955)This turned out to be a very easy strip to locate, because I searched for the word “clothesline” in my computer database, and this was the only Peanuts strip where I had saved that keyword. But, often I have to search for combinations of two or more keywords in order to narrow down to the particular strip that I am looking for. For example, if I had started by searching for the word “blanket,” I would have found hundreds of occurrences, so I would have then had to try the combination of “blanket” and “clothesline.”When I save the information about a strip on my computer, in general, the more time I spend saving multiple unique keywords, the less time it will take to locate that strip someday in the future. For example, I had trouble finding JohnnyDiego’s Linus strip at first, because I was searching for the word “stairs.” But then it turned out that I had saved the word “steps.” If I had originally taken the time to save both the words “stairs” and “steps,” I would have found it immediately. In many cases, I search for only a portion of a keyword. For example, in the case of Charlie Brown, if I can’t remember whether I have saved the word “unconfident,” “confident,” or “confidence,” I search for “confiden” to locate all three. If I am remembering a specific strip, I can often remember some of the exact dialogue, and this makes it much easier to locate the strip. But if I can’t think of a specific strip that would fit the theme of today’s Calvin and Hobbes, then it may take a lot more time to locate one, as I may have to try many keywords and combinations.I avoid saving common keywords, because this will actually slow down the search process. For example, if I were to save the expression “Good grief” every time that Charlie Brown says it, then I would have hundreds of occurrences, and if I ever wanted to find a strip on the topic of “grief” in the future, all of the “good grief” strips would come up when I searched for the word “grief.”The strips themselves are on GoComics. What I am searching is keywords on my computer that I have saved together with the dates of the strips. After I find the date of the strip that I am looking for, I locate the strip on GoComics by date, and then I post it here using the GoComics link for that particular strip.

I hate it when the floor comes up to meet me.. it is never a polite thing. Though on a related note. When of my brother came home late from a bacholar [arty and i was try to help him up the stair.. Old fashion. Stone and marble..

He insisted on falling up the stairs.. Yeah it wasn’t graceful either.. Then he wondered why his shins hurt the next morning……
