OK, now for a lengthy, highly-profound dissertation:

Let’s see……. how do you click this thing again?……. Rats!….. Where did I put that password?……

It is nice to be back; it has been a long time. This looks like a day for speaking in rhyme. Today it seems like it’s beyond the ability Of Calvin and Hobbes to speak with humility. They consider themselves nothing short of iconic, But to me it just seems to be highly ironic That the egos of both get a really big dose Of self-praise for creating a club that is G.R.O.S.S.

In addition to poetry, it looks like one of today’s topics will be humility – or the distinct lack thereof.

Along those lines, and with this being the season of Passover and Easter, I’m reminded of a scripture quotation that is shared by Jews and Christians alike:

”And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Whether or not one is religious, we could all greatly improve our lives, and our world, by focusing on justice, kindness, and humility.

(This is not fully expected of Calvin, of course, since he is only six years old. But most of us can no longer get away with that excuse.)

Speaking of humility and kindness, I want to let everyone know that I was truly humbled by all of your kind comments when I left on my break. I really hadn’t expected my departure to generate so much discussion for two days, including postings from readers who hadn’t commented in the past. Nevertheless, like for a radio announcer, it was very encouraging to learn that there are quite a few other people out there “listening,” even if they generally don’t “call in.”

I always appreciate the humor, insight, and life experiences that so many of you share here, and I have really looked forward to returning. Since I began posting here back in November, I have learned a lot from all of you in ways that I did not expect, including learning some things about myself. My break was both refreshing and difficult at times – sort of like life, but with a bit more focus.

When I left for six weeks, I didn’t want to just disappear without any warning, since I knew that would generate a lot of discussion. You know – various theories about Hobbes being caught in another tiger trap, or choking on a tuna sandwich, or being run over by a cement mixer when he failed to look down the road…..

I expect to be a part-time contributor to this site in the future, coming and going more or less at random, and this should make it easier by avoiding additional goodbyes. At the moment, I’m enjoying catching up on your comments that I missed – assuming that I eventually make it through all of the 88 math comments from my first day off. :>)

    – Hobbes

P.S. A warm welcome to all of you who have joined this group in the past few weeks, and who right now are saying, “Who the heck is Hobbes?”

I was wearing a newspaper hat to beat the heat at a concert in the park last summer. Some Trinity College girls asked me to show them how to make one (smart kids they got in expensive college these days). Soon I saw them selling “Sun hats” for $1 Now I remember being an impoverished student, but I always had pride.

SOMEONE’s sure full of themselves, but so what??? If it weren’t for the differences, what would we have but a very boring society, and not tolerance for Calvin and/or Hobbs … Calvin still reminds me of a little guy my wife watches on occasion, from his dreams and aspirations to his extensive vocabulary, and even his unruly hair … .

Dogsniff: There are people in the world who pretend to pursue kindness and humility, but who have evil motives underneath. Perhaps you have been burned by one of them in the past.

But trust me, there are also people in the world who have good motives at heart, and who really do try to pursue kindness and humility. None of us can be totally unselfish, but what matters is whether or not we strive to be, by trying to live our lives for the good of others rather than just for ourselves.

Personally, I long for a world free of evil, where everyone genuinely practices kindness and humility, where we all perfectly understand the motives of one another, and where you and I are good friends.

The rest of us will ignore your complaints and then welcome and enjoy Hobbes’ comments as long and as detailed as he wishes.

It’s a lost cause. Dogsniff doesn’t have a nice thing to say about anybody or anything. He leaves nasty comments all over this site (and probably many more), and has been doing so since he first showed up here a couple of months ago. I bet he even says the same things to the face he sees in the mirror.

He is of the philosophy: “if you can’t rise to the level of your betters then try to lower them to yours”.

Thanks, everyone, for your support, and it’s nice to be back.

Earlier today, as I was writing my second posting, five fire trucks and two ambulances arrived on my street, and I looked out to discover that my neighbor’s house was on fire. An 84-year-old man was in the house alone, and his life was probably saved because one of my neighbors was out walking her dogs, and she saw the flames in his living-room window.

The important things in life do not include getting stressed-out over the length of the postings that someone writes on a comic-strip Web site.
