Had this in real life once. Manager tried to tell me that one of the benefits of not getting a big raise is that it wouldn’t push me into a higher income tax bracket.

I’ll take that chance.

Give me a big enough raise and I’ll let my accountant worry about that. If not cut my pay so I can get food stamps.

To have enough money to escape taxes requires more than a substantial raise. Regardless of that, no matter how much you get as a raise, you are going to take home more money with a higher income than with a lower income.
