Bob Gorell believes the Civil War was about states’ rights, not slavery. He also calls it the War of Northern Aggression even if the South attacked Fort Sumter first.
Goofy Gorrell doesn’t believe in actual history, only the crap that comes from Fox Propaganda. He’s so out of touch his banner still hasn’t gotten past the 2016 election.
A hundred years ago Southern historians had seized control of the narrative. Slavery was beneficial, Reconstruction was tyrannical, the KKK were heroes, and the Lost Cause fluttered the hearts of the proud sons and daughters of the Confederacy. Gorrell joins those who want to make history like that again.
Opponents of Critical Race Theory says it’s just designed to make White people feel bad. American Indians were brought to the brink of extinction. Blacks were enslaved for centuries. Mexicans were relocated. Japanese were placed in concentration camps, but it’s White people who feel bad?
None of these 1619 critics ever tell us when systemic racism ended in the US. They just tell us it doesn’t exist, and hope we ignore the fact that it surely did.
A guy in my state posted a cartoon online in the comment section of his town’s website (Shrewsbury, MA) that poked fun at critical race theory. The cartoon is by an African American, by the way. The ‘toon and the posters comments were not in violation of the sites rules and confirmed so by the site. A wokester coward took a screen shot and sent it anonymously to the guy’s employer. The left-leaning employer fired the guy. This is one of the fascist tactics of some of those on the left – cancel those who disagree with your orthodoxy. It’s disgusting. I don’t personally know the guy who was fired but I do know who he is. He’s a friend of a friend who used to work with him. I also know where he worked. The guy was an IT manager. He has a wife and kids. He’s not a racist, doesn’t deny that racism exists, doesn’t defend the losing side of the American Civil War, etc. His ex-employer apparently feared blowback from the woke activists if they employed a person who publicly disagreed with critical race theory. They will likely be sued for wrongful termination but would rather deal with that than deal with the fascist bullies who will come after them. There are people who think the guy deserves to be fired for not buying into CRT. Some of them are reading this comment.
Schools should be teaching the 1619 project and critical race theory(shown here as clean sheets of paper), but instead are instead teaching the garbage fantasy that America was not and is not a racist country.
Recycling garbage is only good if you want compost . . . but it doesn’t help grow a better functioning brain if it’s got too much manure. Put it on Texas textbooks and watch what comes up as candidates to represent you in your State. . . . /S
Accurate teaching of history is needed to grow as a society. Relying on inaccurate information leads to inaccurate conclusions. For instance, ancient Egypt has no history of being a slave state.
I taught an upper level World History class before I retired. I received some examples of the NYTimes 1619 project. I found some good things in it and some that could maybe stimulate some debate on how historians use sources. As I did not teach a class related to the topic, I passed almost all of the material on to students who expressed an interest in it. That was 2 years ago; I suspect that the continual “fear” of this is another GOP cultural nothing burger. In History, debate, reexamining of sources, etc. is an essential part of the curriculum.
Please, if you want to talk about “Garbage In, Garbage Out”, let’s take a close look at 30+ years of right wing talk/hate media. My stepdad used to be a smart guy. After decades of watching and listening to that, letting Rush and the rest take a dump in his skull everyday for hours he’s just a mass of rage and alternate reality. #SAD
The reason so many people object to 1619 and Critical Race Theory is their treatment of the present day.
Teaching the history of slavery in North America is not a problem. Teaching children that they own some of the responsibility for that evil is grotesque and harmful.

Gorrell, relax boy.
I teach 8th grade social studies. That means US history, up through Reconstruction.
All those content companies know we have Covid $$$ available and are begging us to spend it on them. My email inbox is choked with offers.
None from 1619. Nothing. Nada. Zip.
As usual you’re making a huge stink over nothing. All you are doing is drawing attention to that which you fear.

If by garbage you mean the whitewashed BS we’ve been feeding our children for the last 100 years I agree. Junior is old enough to know the truth.
