I have feeling that will act more like a tranquilliser.
I’ll have you know I was morally deviant well before 1994. And it had nothing to do with Tina Turner lips. Sexually ambiguous 80s did a number on me.
And a blind generation: Tina and her lips were so hot.
So are we talking Generation X or the Millennials here? When do Tina Turner’s lips have a formative effect?
Better put it on page 3….
I always thought it was Ms. Turner’s legs that got all the attention…
Did any of you notice that she could sing?
They could. They did. They are. I bike around Toronto posting flyers for film programs and talks I give. Periodically one of the papers rages about underage street prostitution. Naturally all the journalism classes and concerned teachers make sure the kids read them. Then we see a whole new wave of young people hit the streets having found an easy way to make money. Same thing with drugs. People read about them. Then they want them. Are there some good journalists? Yes. Are there some exceptional journalists? Yes. Most, however, are mediocre. One of the exceptional ones, Al Aronowitz, was my friend as was Canada’s greatest, Pierre Berton. William Randolph Hearst said he knew Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle was a friend and he knew he was innocent but they sold more papers over his scandal than anything else. A friend who started the Michael Jackson fan club in Ontario, possibly Canada, ordered transcripts from day one of his trial. After reading the first day’s worth he said, “He’s innocent.” People raged. He said, “Put your money where your mouth is.” He made a bundle. When I hear people say Jackson won because he had high powered lawyers, his celebrity and a media circus I think of my friend who chose to examine the court documents instead of the reportage. Nassim Nicholas Taleb in his books from THE BLACK SWAN on urges his readers NOT to read newspapers. Of course, without newspapers we would not have BLOOM COUNTY. For this and the other great comics I read newspapers.
Bless your little moralizing heart, Opus! —In sharp contrast to the gloating, evil Milo….
Opus, we can only hope.
So THAT’S where this all started!
