For the arithmetically challenged:
460 miles /60 mph= 7 2/3 hrs = 7:40 (hrs:mins)
7:40 + 7:30 a.m = 14:70 a.m. = 15:10 a.m. = 3:10 p.m.
Zeno says never.
Boston to Washington is the worst drive. Take the Acela.
Nate: the inspiration for common core math.
Here’s how to handle that: “You make sense, Nate. If you want credit, show me you understand the math by constructing your own problem which uses the same math required to solve this one.”
For kids like Nate, eliminate the names of the cities and just give him distance to be covered, speed and starting time. No room for quibbles there. Oh, he might still fuss about stops for eating or bathroom breaks, but no mention of shuttles will crop up. It’s no surprise where he wound up sitting in the last panel.
The question should read, “if Dave averages 60 mph”. Keep it real.
He asked for it!
Of course you have to leave out the 6 hours you’ll be stuck in traffic on the Cross Bronx Expressway waiting to go over the George Washington bridge because there was an accident in the oncoming traffic lanes and everyone wants to rubberneck…
