There are many words where the spelling has been simplified in the US. This tradition goes back to colonial days and unfortunately hasn’t gone far enough.
I went to pick up doughnuts from a local store. The guy ahead of me was picking up each one to examine it and then put them back. He got very mad when I suggested that he use the tongs provided; no one wants someone else fondling their pastries.
