When my now adult daughter was about ten, we kept a garter snake in an aquarium over the winter for her to observe it’s life cycle.
I went out of my way to buy worms and night crawlers to feed the critter during that time. My wife was not happy about this but she was a good mother to deal with the critter.
As a country boy, I thought that here is a lesson to teach the young about the world around them.
In the Springtime the snake was let go to do it’s snaky thing.
Lucky for me that I still live in the countryside part of Northern Virginia and wish that we had more black rat snakes to take care of the nasty pests in the area. I see fewer snakes every year these days. Too bad.
However, I will never forget when my sister was visiting many years ago and a large five foot black snake was crawling up the brick walk in our living room when she freaked out.
The snake was captured and released unharmed to live it’s rightful place in the world.
You dont have to kill snakes people. As a rule most of the snakes in my area are harmless and eat mice and worms and are not harmful to people.
All of that withstanding, I can understand that people living in certain areas might not want to play with the 15+ foot pythons in the south and rattlesnakes in the southwest.

I neutered a snake once.Used a hatchet.The patient didn’t survive the operation.

When I was very young, I guess I must have neutered hundreds of snakes. I used a lawnmower. Very effective. None survived though.

The old and snaky Sarge
