    Men’s shirt button left over right because when drawing a sword with the right hand and snagging the quillon (cross guard) on ones clothing is Not A Good Thing.

    Won’t speak to women’s fashions but it’s unlikely they would change their wardrobe for a silly thing like that.

    From what I read about 40 years ago, women button to the left because of it made easire access during breast feeding. This makes sense because that would allow the infant being fed to be held securely while the right had would be left free to tend to some other chore. (Women were tough back then.)

    actually, it is because women had hand-maidens who helped them dress and so the buttons were reversed so that the hand maidens could button them up. This is fact!

    And women who couldn’t afford a dresser still wanted the backward buttons, so it looked as if they had one.
